Become a More Valuable Employee

Getting ahead isn't about kissing up to the boss. It's about proving that you're valuable. Here are three ways you can boost what you bring to your organization:
Think like a shareholder. Ask lots of questions about the strategy and what's keeping the top leaders awake at night. Focus on those things in your day-to-day tasks and decisions.
Focus on the highest priorities. With your manager, identify two or three things you can do to drive revenue or profitability. Make sure the majority of your effort goes toward those areas.
Concentrate. If your manager asks you to do things outside of those strategic priorities, push back. Sure, you'll need to work on some things that aren't important. But make a deliberate choice to shortchange those if possible.

Story of Shay

Father of Shay, the disabled boy, told this story to the audience:

Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.'

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again.

Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the

plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed.

The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.

As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman.

Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates.

Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first!

Run to first!'

Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base.

He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!'

Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

B y the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball . the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.

He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay'

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third!

Shay, run to third!'

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!'

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team

'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'.

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!
If life we are given so many opportunities to spread happiness and peace in our surroundings but we are only concerned about our own acheivements, our own belongings, our success.. we dont even care about others near us who are in the thirst of love, affection and care. We dont bother to extend our love for such souls...
How many times you have given charity in the last month?
How many times you have arranged food for boys working on petrol pumps, car wash and such places?
How many times we have thought and worked for orphans?
How many times we have helped our friends and other poor family members?
Time to act is NOW !!!
Think and ACT NOW, startingTODAY and do it on Daily or Weekly Basis.
Spread Happiness and God will bring peace, happiness and prosperity into your lives...

Story: The Mother, the daughter and the map :)

A Mother was reading a magazine and her cute little daughter every now and then distracted her.
To keep her busy, she tore one page on which was printed the map of the world.
She tore it into pieces and asked her to go to her room and put them together to make the map again.

She was sure her daughter would take a lot more time and probably whole of day to get it done.
But the little one came back within minutes with perfect map.

When she asked how she could do it so quickly, she said,
"Oh Mom, there is a man's face on the other side of the paper. I made the face perfect to get the map right." she ran outside to play leaving the mother surprised.

Moral : Perhaps there is always the other side to whatever you experience in this world.

This story indirectly teaches a lesson. That is:
Whenever we come across a challenge or a puzzling situation, Look at the other side...
Will be surprised to see an easy way to tackle the problem or an acute difficulty.

Decide with your heart

Decide with your heart, and then do. Decide with your heart,
And then stay decided until the job is done.
Decide to do what you know is right for you. Then don't let
Anything stop you from getting it finished.
Feel the doubts and fears, and then move forward anyway.
Each time anyone tells you why you can't, remind yourself
Again of why you must.

If circumstances are less than ideal, so be it. You can deal
With the challenges as they come, and move steadily toward
The achievement of what you've decided.
Decide with your heart, and you'll naturally be committed to
That decision. Whatever may come, you'll know you have what
It takes to get the job done.
From the depth of your being, from the truth in your heart,
Decide what you will do. Then delight in the process and in
The fulfillment of getting it done.

World’s First Explosive Detecting Device Unveiled In Japan

Japan has unveiled the world's first explosive-detecting departure gate. On Wednesday, Japanese firm Hitachi announced that airline passengers could be scanned for bombs as they swipe their boarding passes.

The machine blows a short puff of air at a passenger's hand as he scans his pass, the air is then sucked back along with the minute particles that have been blown off the hand. An instant analysis will show if any explosive substances are present on the passenger.
All that takes about one to two seconds, short enough to keep people moving through the gate and onto the plane, said senior chief researcher Minoru Sakairi.

"This allows screening of all passengers and can make air travel safer," he said.

"The device is intended as an extra layer of security on top of existing measures, such as metal detectors, pat-downs and x-ray scanners".

The machine is developed to be effective in finding anyone hiding non-metal-based bombs such as the man who carried plastic explosive in his underwear on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit in 2009.

Hitachi along with Nippon Signal Co and the University of Yamanashi developed the prototype boarding gate with a $3.7 million grant from the government.

The technology can also be used for gates at train stations and concerts, government buildings and sporting venues such as Olympic stadiums, Hitachi said.

Hitachi plans to further experiment the device at airports and train stations before commercialising the prototype device.

Technical: Know more about your computer with speccy

SpeccySpeccy is an advanced System Information tool for your PC. Need to find out what's inside your computer? No problem! Speccy will give you all the information you need.

More information:

Speccy Preview

What's in your computer? If you're like most of us, you can probably name the processor (Intel or AMD, Celeron or Pentium), maybe how much RAM it has, and maybe how big the hard drive is.

When you go to a computer store and see all the bright shiny PCs laid out next to each other, most will have tags or stickers indicating the:

  • Processor brand and model
  • Hard drive size and speed
  • Amount of memory (RAM)
  • Graphics card
  • Operating system

Two or three years later, when it comes time to upgrade your computer, that tag or sticker may be long gone. Speccy was designed as a free electronic "what's inside" sticker for your PC.

Isn't this information in Windows?

Yes and no. Some of the basic information can be found by right-clicking My Computer and then clicking Properties. The General tab lists some statistics, and the Device Manager on the Hardware tab lists all of the hardware you've got installed. But it misses out lots of information that you need.

Speccy will give you detailed statistics on every piece of hardware in your computer. Including CPU, Motherboard, RAM, Graphics Cards, Hard Disks, Optical Drives, Audio support. Additionally Speccy adds the temperatures of your different components, so you can easily see if there's a problem!

Why do I need Speccy?

At first glance, Speccy may seem like an application for system administrators and power users. It certainly is, but Speccy can also help normal users, in everyday computing life.

If you need to add more memory to your system, for example, you can check how many memory slots your computer has and what memory's already installed. Then you can go out and buy the right type of memory to add on or replace what you've already got.

If you're going to be selling your PC, you can use Speccy to quickly list out the components. Or, if you're buying a PC, you can use Speccy to check that the computer has what the label says it has.

Also, Speccy comes in handy for support. If you're on the phone with technical support and they want to know what video card you have installed, there's no need to hunt around Windows. Speccy has all the information on one easy-to-understand screen.

The law of the seed

Take a look at an apple tree. There might be five hundred apples on the tree, each with ten seeds. That's a lot of seeds!

We might ask, "Why would you need so many seeds to grow just a few more trees?"

Nature has something to teach us here. It's telling us: "Most seeds never grow. So if you really want to make something happen, you better try more than once."

This might mean:

You'll attend twenty interviews to get one job.

You'll interview forty people to find one good employee.

You'll talk to fifty people to sell one house, car, vacuum cleaner, idea...

And you might meet a hundred acquaintances to find one special friend.

When we understand the "Law of the Seed", we don't get so disappointed.

We stop feeling like victims. Laws of nature are not things to take personally.

Story: Manage your appearance

By Junaid Tahir
A famous scholar was delivering the lecture to some people. He had pain in his knee joints so he was sitting on a chair as his audience was aware of this knee pain. After sometime a person in a nice suit and overall decent looking personality came and asked to join. The scholar didn't find it appropriate to continue delivering the lecture in sitting position so he stood up and continued his lecture. Though he had pain in the knees but he was patient thinking that the recently joined person is a noble, wise and educated personality.
After a few moments, the person interrupted the scholar and asked, what is the time to take breakfast? The scholar wasn't expecting this stupid question so he politely said, you can take any time in the morning you wake up. The person said, what if I wake up at 2 o'clock. The scholar thought that it's time to sit on the chair again because his perception about the person was no more the same as it was some minutes ago :)

The concept here is that your first looks matter a lot. The people you meet usually make the perception about your personality up to a degree of 70%. Although this story ended up as a disaster for the scholar however had this been the case that newly joined person didn't speak, he would have made a great impression on the whole class !
Article written by Junaid.Tahir

However, making a good impression doesn't mean that you have to be in a costly tuxedo or a high end car; you can still make a good impression by being decent and simple. A neat appearance, a politely started conversation, a strong hand shake, a humble voice and a warm good-bye will increase your respect a lot regardless of your financial situation, your education level and your professional or business position.  Remember the fact that human psychology, most of the time, follows the standard mental paradigms and common sense logics; which simply means that a good appearance will make a good impression. If you understand this basic concept, you can make a great deal out of it in your day to day life.

Having said that life is not about first impressions only. You need to meet same people again and again which means you need to have long term impression on others which requires you to demonstrate strong personality traits. This primarily involves your communication skills, your emotional and empathic skills and  consistent behavior.

Always remember that your character is your real wealth and you must endeavor to improve this in every single aspect of your life. Below are some recommended articles in this context:
