TOP 10 Guaranteed Ways to Screw Up a Project

I'm sure we can all relate to most of these, but in reality, if we don't follow the PM processes set up to make us successful, we may find ourselves the ones this is directed towards.


1. Don't bother prioritizing your organization's overall project load. After all, if there's a free-for-all approach to your overall program management (i.e., survival of the fittest), then the projects that survive will be those that were destined to survive. In the meantime, senior management need not trouble themselves aligning projects with strategic goals or facing the logical imperative that people simply cannot have 12 number one priorities!


2. Encourage sponsors and key stakeholders to take a passive role on the project team. Let them assert their authority to reject deliverables at random, without participating in defining project outcomes in a high-resolution fashion. And above all, don't bother project sponsors when their constituents drop the ball and miss their deadlines.

3. Set up ongoing committees focusing on management process and make project team members participate in frequent meetings and write lots of reports, preferably when critical project deadlines are coming due.

4. Interrupt team members relentlessly, preferably during their time off. Find all sorts of trivial issues that "need to be addressed", then keep their beepers and cell phones ringing and bury them in emails to keep them off balance.

5. Create a culture in which project managers are expected to 'roll over' and take it when substantive new deliverable are added halfway through the project. (After all, only a tradesperson like a plumber or electrician would demand more money or more time for additional services; our people are 'professionals' and should be prepared to be flexible.)

6. Half way through the project, when most of the deliverables have begun to take shape, add a whole bunch of previously unnamed stakeholders and ask them for their opinions about the project and its deliverables.

7. Encourage the sponsor to approve deliverables informally (with nods, smiles, and verbal praise); never force sponsors to stand behind their approvals with a formal sign-off. (In other words, give 'em plenty of room to weasel out of agreements!)

8. Make sure project managers have lots of responsibilities and deadlines, but no authority whatsoever to acquire or remove people from the project; to get enough money, materials, or facilities; or insist on timely participation of key reviewers.

9. Describe project deliverables in the vaguest possible terms so sponsors and reviewers have plenty of leeway to reinvent the project outputs repeatedly as the project unfolds.

Life is sculpted on a moment-to-moment basis. Every one of the thoughts we think, the words we speak, and the actions we take contributes to the complex quality and character of the universe's unfolding. It simply is not possible to be alive without making an impact on the world that surrounds us. Every action taken affects the whole as greatly as every action not taken. And when it comes to making the world a better place, what we choose not to do can be just as important as what we choose to do.

For example, when we neglect to recycle, speak up, vote, or help somebody in immediate need, we are denying ourselves the opportunity to be an agent for positive change. Instead, we are enabling a particular course to continue unchallenged, picking up speed even at it goes along. By holding the belief that our actions don't make much of a difference, we may find that we often tend to forego opportunities for involvement. Alternatively, if we see ourselves as important participants in an ever-evolving world, we may feel more inspired to contribute our unique perspective and gifts to a situation.

It is wise to be somewhat selective about how and where we are using our energy in order to keep ourselves from becoming scattered. Not every cause or action is appropriate for every person. When a situation catches our attention, however, and speaks to our heart, it is important that we honor our impulse to help and take the action that feels right for us. It may be offering a kind word to a friend, giving resources to people in need, or just taking responsibility for our own behavior. By doing what we can, when we can, we add positive energy to our world. And sometimes, it may be our one contribution that makes all the difference.

Health: How to Reduce Gum Swelling

Gum swelling is caused by any number of factors. Individuals with swollen gums may be suffering from gum disease, irritation from food or drink, tooth decay, insufficient nutrition, or other oral issues. Several solutions for swollen gums are listed below, but remember that the only way to understand exactly what is causing the swelling is visiting your dentist.

Method 1 of 2: Relieving Swollen Gums

    Identify the cause of your swollen gums. Gums can become swollen for a variety of reasons, though in many cases the condition can be a sign of gum disease. It is important that you identify the cause of the swelling, so that you can pursue the correct course of action -- either caring for your gums at home, or making an appointment to see a dentist. Some common causes include:
    • Incorrect brushing or flossing techniques. In many cases, swollen gums are the result of poor oral hygiene, where plaque is allowed to build up between the teeth and at the gum line. To overcome this, you will need to start brushing teeth thoroughly and flossing regularly to remove excess plaque. In addition, many people who do floss between their teeth do it too roughly, which can also cause swelling.
    • Gingivitis and periodontitis. If good oral hygiene is not maintained, gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis can easily develop. Gingivitis is the less severe form, and can be reversed if caught early. Periodontitis, on the other hand, is more serious and can lead to tooth loss. If you suspect you might have either of these gum diseases, you should consult a dentist.
    • Mouth ulcers. Mouth ulcers which form on the gums can lead to pain and swelling. You can usually identify mouth ulcers, also known as canker sores, by their appearance; they will have a whitish center and red edges. Multiple mouth ulcers can appear at once, but they are usually treatable and non-contagious.
    • Chemotherapy. One of the many unfortunate side effects of chemotherapy is painful, swollen and bleeding gums. It can also cause the growth of painful ulcers and sores on the gums. Although these symptoms can be relieved, they will not stop while chemotherapy treatment continues.
    • Tobacco. Smoking cigarettes and using other tobacco products commonly contributes to painful, swollen gums. In fact, people who use tobacco products are far more likely to develop gum disease than non-tobacco users. As a result, the first step in relieving swollen gums is quitting smoking.
    • Hormones. Swollen gums may be the result of an upsurge in the release of hormones which increase blood flow to the gums. These hormones include those which are produced during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. Certain birth control pill may also release these hormones.[1]

    Gently brush and floss your teeth. As mentioned above, swollen gums can often be the result of built-up plaque inside the mouth. This is the best-case scenario, as you can easily rectify the problem with gentle, yet thorough brushing and flossing. You should aim to brush your teeth at least twice a day, morning and evening, and following meals if possible. You should try to floss once a day to remove the plaque a toothbrush cannot reach, but avoid flossing more than this as it may irritate gums further.
    • Use a toothbrush with soft nylon bristles. This will effectively clean teeth without causing further irritation. Avoid toothbrushes with medium or hard bristles, as these an cause gums to swell further and can even erode tooth enamel.
    • Many people make the mistake of believing that brushing harder means brushing better. This is not the case. Gums are made of delicate tissue, so brushing too hard will do them more harm than good. You should also avoid brushing in a vigorous back-and-forth motion, and switch to gentle circular motions instead.
    • Flossing is neglected by many people, but even those who do floss may be aggravating their swollen gums by doing it too roughly. Avoid "snapping" the floss in between your teeth, as this can damage fragile gum tissue. Instead try to slide the floss carefully between teeth, following the curve of each tooth as you go.[1]
    • One last thing you can do is choose a gum-protecting toothpaste which is designed to help prevent gingivitis. Most major toothpaste brands produce a version.

    Rinse out your mouth with a saltwater solution. Gargling a saltwater solution is the oldest trick in the book when it comes to reducing swollen gums, but it is still one of the most effective. The salt works as an antibacterial agent, riding the mouth of contaminants and soothing inflamed gums.
    • To make a saltwater solution, dissolve a teaspoon of regular table salt in a cup of warm water. Gargle this solution, making sure to swish it all around the mouth so it reaches the gums. Do not swallow.
    • A similar result is achieved by swishing a mixture of water and fresh lemon juice around the mouth for about 30 seconds. This may not be quite as effective as the saltwater solution but it will probably taste better!
    • The saltwater solution can also be gargled to ease a sore throat, and used to clean new piercings and disinfect wounds.

    Use warm and cold compresses. Warm and cold compresses can be used to provide easy and immediate relief to sore and swollen gums. Warm compresses are best for relieving pain, while cold compresses will effectively reduce swelling. Hold the compresses against your face rather than against the gums themselves, as this is less awkward and prevents the gums from becoming further irritated by sudden changes in temperature.
    • To make a hot compress: Soak a clean facecloth in warm (not hot) water, wring out the excess moisture, then hold the facecloth against your face until the pain begins to subside.
    • To make a cold compress: Wrap a couple of ice cubes in a small, clean cloth or some paper towel. Alternatively, you can use a bag of frozen vegetables (like frozen peas) or a special cold pack that has been stored in the freezer. Hold the compress against the face until the swelling goes down and the area becomes slightly numb.

    Avoid gum irritants. While your gums are sore and swollen, it is important that you avoid any substances that are going to exacerbate the swelling, such as tobacco products and alcohol. In addition, harsh mouthwashes -- which you may be using to disinfect your mouth -- can actually aggravate swollen gums, so you should also try taking a break from them for a while.

    Drink plenty of water. Drinking lots of water will help to flush food residue and bacteria from your mouth, limiting the development of more plaque. In addition, drinking water will stimulate the production of saliva, which naturally helps to kill bacteria.[2]

    Try gently massaging your gums. A gentle gum massage can help to ease pain and reduce inflammation by increasing blood circulation in the gums. Use a gentle, circular motion to massage the the swollen gums for about one minute. Remember to wash your hands before doing this and ensure that your fingernails are clean and clipped short. This will help to prevent the spread of bacteria.

    Apply some clove oil. Clove oil is one natural treatment for swollen gums that has been proven effective in decreasing pain and reducing inflammation. Simply apply a little clove oil directly to the swollen gums three times a day using a q-tip. Alternatively, you can place a few drops of the clove oil into a cup of water and swish it around your mouth. Clove oil can be found in most drug stores and health food stores.[3]

Method 2 of 2: Preventing Swollen Gums

    Brush your teeth well, at least 2-3 times per day. Brushing your teeth removes plaque from your mouth, which helps fight against gum disease and tooth decay. In fact, nearly all oral health problems can be prevented with consistent and thorough dental hygiene. You should brush your teeth at least once in the morning and once in the evening, and after meals if possible.
    • If you are unsure about the correct brushing technique, you should ask your dentist for a quick lesson during your next check-up, he or she will be happy to oblige!

    Floss daily. Flossing daily is an essential part of any oral hygiene routine, but it is a practice which is often neglected. Flossing removes the built-up plaque and bacteria from the cracks and crevices your toothbrush can't quite reach.
    • Remember to floss gently, to avoid irritating delicate gum tissue, and use a clean piece of floss between each tooth, to prevent spreading bacteria from one part of the mouth to another.
    • If you find dental floss awkward to use, look for a packet of dental picks at the drug store -- these are small wooden or plastic sticks which can be inserted between the teeth to achieve the same effects as flossing.

    Ensure that your diet is varied and rich in vitamin C, calcium and Folic acid. Poor nutrition can lead to gum inflammation (among other issues). In particular, it is important that you get enough vitamin C, calcium an d Folic acid in your diet. This is due to the fact that vitamin C and Folic acid actively contribute to healthy gums and prevent gingivitis, while it has been proven that people who are deficient in calcium are much more likely to develop gum diseases. Take a daily multi-vitamin, and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.[2]
    • The top food sources of vitamin C include papaya, bell peppers, strawberries, broccoli, pineapple, Brussels sprouts, kiwifruits, oranges, cantaloupe and kale.
    • The best sources of calcium include dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt, along with sardines, tofu, salmon, soy milk, cereals and collard greens.
    • Foods with high levels of Folic acid include dark, leafy greens, broccoli,asparagus, peas, beans, lentils, celery, avocado and citrus fruits.

    Be wary of very hot or very cold food and beverages. Many people find that their gums are very sensitive to temperature, especially as they get older. As a result, it might be best to avoid extremely cold, icy drinks, or very hot teas, coffees and soups. This doesn't mean that you have to avoid these things completely, you may just want to wait until they have warmed up or cooled down slightly before drinking.

    Get enough sleep and avoid stress. Exhaustion may lead to puffiness across your face and in your gums, so try to get seven to eight hours sleep a night. You should also avoid stress as much as possible, as stress causes the body to release a chemical known as cortisol, which has been linked with inflammation of the gums and other parts of the body.[1]
    • You can reduce stress by exercising regularly. Exercise releases happy hormones which are guaranteed to put you in a good mood. In addition, exercise will tire you out, helping you to get a better sleep at night. It's win-win!
    • You can also reduce stress and promote relaxation by taking some personal time each day to go for a walk, read a book, or take a bath. You should also avoid over-stimulating yourself before bed, so turn off the television and computer at least an hour before bed.

    Eliminate tobacco. As mentioned before, tobacco can be very irritating on gums and people who smoke or use other tobacco products are at increased risk of developing gum disease. If possible, you should try to quit smoking, or at the very least cut back on your tobacco use.

    Visit your dentist for a teeth cleaning and examination. Swollen gums are often the manifestation of a more severe dental problem like periodontitis or tooth decay, so if your gums are consist

Even if your teeth and gums seem completely healthy, it is good practice to make an appointment with your dentist or dental hygienist at least twice a year.[4]

Here are some quick tips to improve your Self Confidence. If we are committed to have a healthy self confidence there are many things you can do every day to boost your self confidence, each small steps that will help you to reach your goal. The good news is that self-esteem is not fixed and can be improved, try some of the steps below to boost your confidence and self-esteem.

1) Identify your successes. Everyone is good at something, so discover the things at which you excel, then focus on your talents. Give yourself permission to take pride in them. Give yourself credit for your successes. Inferiority is a state of mind in which you've declared yourself a victim. Do not allow yourself to be victimized.

2) Look in the mirror and smile. Studies surrounding what's called the "facial feedback theory" suggest that the expressions on your face can actually encourage your brain to register certain emotions. So by looking in the mirror and smiling every day, you might feel happier with yourself and more confident in the long run.

3) Exercise and eat healthy. Exercise raises adrenaline and makes one feel happier and healthier. It is certainly an easy and effective way to boost your self-confidence.

4) Turn feelings of envy or jealousy into a desire to achieve. Stop wanting what others have just because they have it; seek things simply because you want them, whether anybody else has them or not.

5) When you're feeling superbly insecure, write down a list of things that are good about you. Then read the list back. You'd be surprised at what you can come up with.

6) Don't be afraid to push yourself a bit - a little bit of pressure can actually show just how good you are!

7) You can try taking a martial arts or fitness class/course (or both). This will help build confidence and strength. Invest in some new clothing and donate some of your old clothing to send a message to yourself that you both look sharp and feel sharp.

8) Try to make yourself talk positively at all times. When you hear yourself saying you can't do something, stop and say you can. Unless you try, you will never know whether you are able to or not.

9) Don't get wrapped up in your mistakes and dwell on bad points; they can contrast your good points or even give you something to improve. There's no feeling like being good at something you were really bad at.

10) Don't confuse what you have with who you are. People degrade their self worth when comparing possessions.

11) Surround yourself with nurturing friends, not overly critical individuals who make you feel inadequate or insecure. This could do great harm and damage to your self confidence.

Blaming Someone or Something

When someone is doing something or is about to do something, in a way we don't want it to be done and when we are not able to accept it, we become angry.

However, When someone is doing something or is about to do something, in a way we don't want it to be done - and we are able to accept it- we remain tolerant.

When someone has something which we don't have,

or someone is able to produce the results which we are not able to produce- and we are not able to accept it – we become jealous.

When someone has something which we don't have, or someone is able to produce the results which we are not able to produce and we are able to accept it we get inspired.

Then emotional equation is quite simple.
Something + Acceptance = Positive Emotion
Something + Non Acceptance = Negative Emotion

So, it is not 'something' or 'someone' who is making us feel positive or negative, but it is our 'acceptance'  or 'non acceptance' of something or someone, which is making us feel positive or negative.

It isn't the world but the quality of our response to the world that determines the quality of our emotions. Next time we feel disturbed with a negative emotion, instead of asking who or what is disturbing us, we will examine who or what we are resisting (not accepting) that is causing this disturbance in us. We will replace resistance (non acceptance) with acceptance, and the negative emotion will turn into a positive one.

Emotional management begins by stopping to blame that 'something' or 'someone' and starting to take the responsibility to respond life with 'acceptance'.

Some Tips To Make It Happen

 To solve a problem or to reach your goal, you don't need to know all the answers in advance.
But you must have a clear idea of the problem or the goal you want to reach.
All you have to do is know where you're going.
The answers will come to you of their own accord.
Don't procrastinate when faced with a big difficult problem, break the problem into parts, and handle one part at a time. Remember, the Impossible can always be broken down in to possibilities.

No Room For Doubt

Have your doubts become too comfortable and familiar? Are your doubts such a big part of your life that they're holding you back?

Keep in mind that doubt is nothing more than an opinion. You may have good reasons for doubt, but that doesn't necessarily make it true

When you have your doubts, what you don't have is action. When you fill your mind with doubt, you crowd out the positive possibilities.

Certainly it pays to be careful and realistic. But that doesn't mean you must be doubtful about your own abilities.

Instead of hiding behind your doubts, make the effort to prove them wrong. Instead of letting the doubts hold you back, choose instead to let the challenges push you forward.

Leave no room in your mind for doubt. And you'll make plenty of room in your life for real fulfillment.

How to Manager Your Life - A Nice Analogy

A professor stood before his philosophy class 
and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly,
He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
And proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students, if the jar was full?
They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
them into the jar.   He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open Areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full.  They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full.
The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.  The students laughed.

'Now,' said the professor,   as the laughter subsided,
'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things - family,
children, health, Friends, and Favorite passions
Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, Your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car.
The sand is everything else --The small stuff.
'If you put the sand into the jar first,'  He continued,
there is no room for  the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,
You will never have room for the things that are important to you.
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

A man was caught and thrown into a pit (A big hole on earth) of about "40 feet" deep, just because he was a stranger.
