How to Overcome Fear

By Junaid Tahir Fear is one of the major blocking obstacles against your success. You tend to compromise with your circumstances and prefer to continue your status quo condition because you are afraid of making decisions. Since you lack in courage you cannot move forward in your life with liberty.

On the other hand successful people are those who take risks in life. Successful people understand that taking risks will lead them experience new horizons in their field, will give them more vision and more confidence,  give them wisdom and success by exposing them to more and more challenges and consequently help them achieve their dreams. Such people keep taking new risks in order to achieve what they want to achieve. Whenever there is a doubtful situation they take the next baby step in order to determine whether it is fine to move ahead. In case they fail, they take one step back and re-determine their direction using their analytical skills. 

So if you would like to live a successful life, you must defeat your fears. The reasons for being under the clouds of fear might be because of several doubts or unanswered questions in your mind.  In this article, I have compiled and answered a few of such queries in order to boost your confidence level:

Question: Do I have enough info in making this decision?
Answer: You may or may not have the full information as of now. However you can gather all the facts by consulting the right professionals, by reading books, by discussing with your friends and well-wishers, by posting your questions to online forums, by studying the market and by taking advice from experienced people. Once you have collected all the information, write it on a piece of paper; positive points on one side and negative points on another side. Now read them slowly with full focus. Once done, you are all set for making the decision.

Question: What if I fail?
Answer: Consider the worst case scenario as this gives you inner strength and makes you prepare for it. However if the worst case as per your thinking is a serious disaster then reduce your risks by reducing your goals, your investment, energies, efforts etc. Change some of the points from your original plan and re-asses the worst case.

Question: Do I have the capability to do it:  
Answer: See if you can learn it by reading, training, counseling or brain storming. Believe in your inner powers. List down the capabilities required for a specific task and start polishing yourself in each domain one by one. This might take some time but once you learn and polish your skills you will be able to make wonders in your domain.

Question: What will people say?  
Answer: People will comment any way. It's your life and you have all the authority to do what you want to do in order to achieve what you want to achieve. Don't worry about social factors, instead focus on your plans and decisions. Evil social factors will die their death one by one once you start producing the results. Strengthen your thoughts, avoid the unnecessary criticism and you will be able to set new trends in your domain.

Question: Is anyone else afraid of same thing? 
Answer: Yes everyone is afraid of failures but only bold people make bold moves to accomplish things. Remember, common people see things while they are happening whereas smart people make things happen.

Question: What If I am trapped in tragic Situation:
Answer: To overcome a tragic fearful situation is to think of a genius person and imagine how he would have acted under the same condition. You will definitely get a new idea to try.

Closing my article by emphasizing one more time to throw your fears away, convert your risks into new opportunities, execute your plans and live like an independent and prosperous soul. Your inner confidence, your guts and your will power can make things happen. 2. Honest / Speaking the Truth

As an engineer, you should be honest even if the situation will not favor you, even if it is painful to deal and even if it contradicts the needs, desires, beliefs, and intentions of the organization. Many members of the medical community, like myself, believe that suboptimal levels of omega-3 fatty acids may contribute to symptoms of ADHD and related developmental problems as well as many other mental health problems over one’s lifetime. (4)
A 2012 study involved children from 6 to 12 years of age with ADHD who were being treated with methylphenidate and standard behavior therapy for more than six months. The parents of these children reported no improvement in behavior and academic learning using these standard treatments. The researchers randomly gave some of the children an omega-3 and omega-6 supplement or a placebo. They found “statistically significant improvement” for the omega group in the following categories: restlessness, aggressiveness, completing work and academic performance. (5)
Another study found that increasing omega-3 intake, specifically DHA, may improve literacy and behavior in children with ADHD. (6) Fish oil is believed to work via its effects on brain function, which makes sense when you consider that 60 percent of the brain is composed of fats. (7)

2. Alzheimer’s Disease
For several years now, the fish oil and Alzheimer’s disease connection has been studied with consistent results. The essential fatty acids vital for brain function that are found in fish oil can not only slow cognitive decline, but can help prevent brain atrophy in older adults. A study published in the FASEB Journal looked at the health effects of four- to 17-month supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. The findings once again confirm the potential for fish oil to be used as a weapon to fend off the onset of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. (8)
Another study conducted by researchers at Rhode Island Hospital examined the relationship between fish oil supplementation and indicators of cognitive decline. The subjects of the study were older adults: 229 cognitively normal individuals, 397 patients with mild cognitive impairment and 193 patients with Alzheimer’s disease. They were assessed with neuropsychological tests and brain magnetic resonance imaging every six months while taking fish oil supplements. The study found that the adults taking fish oil (who had not yet developed Alzheimer’s and did not have genetic risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s known as APOE ε4) experienced significantly less cognitive decline and brain shrinkage than adults not taking fish oil. 3. Anxiety
The European Journal of Neuroscience published a study in 2013 showing that fish oil reversed all anxiety-like and depression-like behavior changes induced in rats. This is an interesting study because it stresses the importance of supplementing with fish oil at “critical periods of brain development.” (10) This is exactly why I recommend giving fish oil to our kids from early on to help them so they won’t develop anxiety or depression later in life.

4. Arthritis
An 18-month study was published in 2014 that evaluated how borage seed oil — rich in GLA — and fish oil rich fared against each other in treating patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It was discovered that all three groups (one taking fish oil, one taking borage oil and one taking a combination of the two) “exhibited significant reductions” in disease activity, and no therapy outperformed the others. For all three, “meaningful clinical responses” were the same after nine months. (11)
This is great news for both fish and borage oil when it comes to arthritis patients, but it’s critical to emphasize that the results were the same because taking too many supplements is simply a waste of money.
Another study also showed that omega-3 fish oil supplements worked just as well as NSAIDs in reducing arthritic pain and are a safer alternative to NSAIDs. (12)

5. Cancer
Scientific studies have found that fish oil can help to prevent and kill various cancers, including colon, prostate and breast. (13) Not only has research proven that it makes conventional cancer drugs more effective, but it’s also an effective stand-alone therapy in natural cancer treatment.
A scientific review published in 2013 looked at omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and prostate cancer prevention. Researchers concluded that there’s a great deal of evidence suggesting that omega-3s have antiproliferative effects – which means they inhibit cancer cell growth – in cancer cell lines, animal models and humans. In addition, the “direct effects on cancer cells” and indirect anti-inflammatory effects on the immune system fighting the cancer likely contribute to the ability of omega-3 fatty acids to inhibit tumor growth. (14)
A group out of India conducted a study published in Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology based on the premise that “fish oil rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids has been preferred to chemosensitize tumor cells to anti-cancer drugs.” The study found that using 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) to treat colorectal cancer along with fish oil increased the survival rate in carcinogen-treated animals. Researchers also found that the fish oil ameliorated hematologic depression, along with gastrointestinal, hepatic and renal toxicity caused by the 5-FU. (15)
A scientific review in 2014 evaluated study findings on omega-3 intake in relation to the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, the most prevalent cancer among women. The review found that EPA and DHA, as well as ALA, can differentially inhibit breast tumor development. According to this review, there is solid evidence to support the use of omega-3s as “a nutritional intervention in the treatment of breast cancer to enhance conventional therapeutics, or potentially lowering effective doses.” (16) Additionally, a 2016 study found that “very high fish consumption in early adulthood to midlife may be associated with decreased risk of breast cancer.” (17)
Fish oil also looks to be helpful for another type of cancer experienced by women: endometrial cancer. A scientific study recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that “long chain omega-3 intake associated with reduced endometrial cancer risk only in normal-weight women.” (18)

According to the Cardiovascular Research Institute in Maastricht in Netherlands, “Epidemiological studies show that replacing fat with carbohydrates may even be worse [than the Western-type high-fat diet] and that various polyunsaturated fatty acids (FA) have beneficial rather than detrimental effects on CVD (cardiovascular disease) outcome.” This includes fish-oil fatty acids with anti-inflammatory properties, which can help prevent and reverse a plethora of cardiovascular diseases. A study published in the medical journal Circulation found that people who took a high dose of fish oil each for six months following the occurrence of a heart attack actually improved their hearts’ overall functioning and also reduced biomarkers of systemic inflammation. We’ve already seen that fish oil can help with depression-like symptoms in rats, but what about people? A study published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience evaluated the effects of fish oil supplementation on prefrontal metabolite concentrations in adolescents with major depressive disorder. Researchers found that there was a 40 percent decrease in major depression disorder symptoms in addition to marked improvements in amino acid and nutrition content in the brain, specifically, the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The researchers found that people who regularly consumed 500 milligrams each day of omega-3 fatty acid in their diets (equal to two servings of fatty fish per week) were 48 percent less likely to develop diabetic retinopathy than those who consumed less. I had several prescriptions to fill after getting back from the doctor’s.

A few days later I began to have a rash with small red bumps. I searched endlessly to see if others had these problems but only found a few cases. I was confused because the meds and vitamins I were prescribed weren’t anything over-the-top.

It was meds and vitamins like:

·  Folic acid

·  Magnesium

·  Amino acids

·  B1, 6, and 12

It was frustrating because I finally felt like I was in good health. I thought I had found the natural remedies I couldn’t live without. Yet, here I was itching and “breaking out”.

So, I did what anyone with free time would do… I began a process of elimination.

The Process of Elimination

I had been given a few different vitamins and meds during testing. Luckily, the doctor provided me with a sheet that detailed the ones I received. I dug them out, scanned the document, and noticed the overlaps in what I was prescribed:

·  Folic acid

·  Magnesium

·  Pantoprazole

It turns out that both have a chance to cause a rash. Reactions are usually worse (vomiting and dizziness) but I had one of the rare instances of these small, red dots that itched.

The problem…

Money is tight now so I didn’t want to discard the prescriptions and vitamin suggestions after only having filled them. What I did find is a Top 100 drugs list that explained to me that my Pantoprazole wasn’t covered by insurance to begin with. I began to shop around and found a better rate since I could eliminate this med from the list since I had taken it multiple times in the past.

That left me with the folic acid and magnesium.

Before I began removing these entirely I took the time to understand and adjust the drug dosage because I had figured maybe it was too much for my body. I cut them both in half and went with this for a few days – no dice.

That left me with one option.

Starting from Zero

I decided to continue taking my stomach med (Pantoprazole) but only one of the vitamins at a time. It would be magnesium at first because I remembered how the rash began not long after I had been given it during the doctor visit.

A few days pass and everything is going smoothly. The red bumps are going down and I’m feeling less itchy. I landed on the culprit: it was the magnesium after all.

But I didn’t want to completely dismiss the folic acid.

I added the folic acid back into the rotation and sure enough the rash came back. I knew this would happen but I wanted to verify my claims. Better to know than not, right?

A week passes and my skin is looking healthy and feeling great.

An Additional Tip on the Process of Elimination

One of the big problems is that we take too many medications.

Our medical professionals are trained and experienced but they’re human and make mistakes. Sometimes drugs overlap and we have a bad reaction. It’s a trial and error with some medications.

I would suggest you talk to your GP and express your concerns about the amount of medications you’re taking. They could be working against another. It may be the reason you itch.

Work together and do the process of elimination.

It will save you time, money, and complications. You’ll settle in on what works and what to avoid.

Humor: Indian tourist in San Francisco

​ An Indian tourist walks into a curio shop in San Francisco.

Looking around at the exotic, he notices a very lifelike, Life-sized bronze statue of a rat. It has no price tag, But is so striking he decides he must have it.

He takes it to the owner: "How much for the bronze rat?" "Twelve dollars for the rat, one hundred dollars for the Story," says the owner.

The tourist gives the man twelve dollars. "I'll just take the rat, you can keep the story."

As he walks down the street carrying his bronze rat, He notices that a few real rats crawl out of the alleys and sewers and begin following him down the street. This is disconcerting; he begins walking faster. But within a couple of blocks, the herd of rats behind him grows to hundreds, and they begin squealing.

He begins to trot toward the Bay, looking around to see that the rats now numbered in the MILLIONS, and are still squealing and coming towards him faster and faster. Concerned, even scared, he runs to the edge of the Bay and throws the bronze rat as far out into the Bay as he can. Amazingly, the millions of rats all jump into the Bay after it, and are all drowned.

The man walks back to the curio shop. "Ah ha," says the owner, "You have come back for the Story?" "No," says the man, "I came back to see if you have a statue of an Indian politician in bronze!

This is more or less part of DNA that we react to situations instantly without giving a second thought. At times, this is perfectly a normal phenomenon and the impact of our reactions is acceptable as long as it based on positive and realistic judgement. However, it is usually seen, that our reactions slash someone's emotions or causing psychological disturbance, especially if the person is sensitive. Here are some situations:

1.      The Taxi drive might be an MBA. Don't underestimate his education level. He might have a reason to drive taxi.
2.      The boy who mistakenly hit you in crowd might have leg surgery a week back. Don't misjudge his character.
3.      The senior you made fun of because of the scars on his face might have fought for the country. Don't feel irritated because of his outlook.
4.      The boy you made fun of because of crying, his mother might have died. Don't think that a male cannot cry.
5.      The person who was issued a police ticket for parking in disabled parking area might actually have a disabled son/daughter. Don't conclude things quickly.
6.      A not-so-tall person might have much higher ethics. Don't conclude things based on physical outlook.
7.      A poor man may have cleaner heart than you. Don't have a discriminated feelings as he may be more closer to the Lord because of his deeds.
8.      The rich person might have earned his wealth without any corruption. Don't put bad labels on successful people without knowing them very closely.
9.      A rude person in market may have lost his car in an accident. Don't react based on an instant observation. Find out the real story or stay calm.
10.   The fat person might be starving today. Don't Laugh on his obesity. Probably he is obese because of his genetics.

Good and bad reactions create strong ripples. Whatever you say or do is observed, absorbed and repeated by the people around you which in turns gets expanded in the society. Be mindful on what you say to others or what you share on social media or what you do in public. Each of your action is transforming the society in a good or bad way. So don't be judgmental and don't be reactive; it is not what we say, it is how we say.
