What is your calling? What is your purpose in life? What did you come to this world to do?




If you’re a passionate and introspective soul like me, you’ve probably asked yourself these questions before. More and more everyday we read about how we should find our purpose and pursue it throughout our lives in order to find meaning and contentment. There are even scientific studies that show that people who view their work as a calling rather than just a career or a job have a higher life and work satisfaction. So what exactly is this calling or purpose?

I’ve personally struggled with this concept for many years. Before I took on this journey of deep self-analysis and reflection, I thought ambitious goals were enough in order to feel a sense of direction. I hadn’t read much about happiness and had no clue positive psychology (the scientific study of happiness and well-being) even existed. Yet from personal experience, I knew that happiness not only derived from a present state of joy, but also from the pursuit of an objective that gave me something to aspire to. That is, until I found myself feeling empty despite my achievement of those goals.



And as I reflected on these feelings of emptiness and boredom that had arisen despite my attainments and successes I realized something. Meaning and satisfaction come from a personal investment in what we do and the intrinsic fulfillment we get from it. It has nothing to do with financial gain, social advancement, or any other type of external reward or motivation. It is about doing something that we love for the sake of doing it. Exerting our efforts and spending our time on passions that light the spark inside of us and allow us to share with the world the unique gifts we posse
The problem was, I had no idea what all of this even meant. I had never before stopped to think about what I found intrinsically rewarding or fulfilling. Monetary gain, external validation, and boosts to my ego were pretty much the only drivers I knew. More so, I thought this “calling” meant having one passion we were born with to pursue relentlessly. I’d heard all these stories about people knowing from a very young age what they were meant to do and then dedicating their lives to doing just that. I had even witnessed that at home with my father who had always been so passionately devoted to being a lawyer. Yet, here I was, almost 30 years old and with no clue regarding this passion I was supposed to have figured out a long time ago.

So I spent some years trying to find this long-lost purpose of mine. I discovered during that time passions I had no idea I even had. Yet, I wasn’t sure how to make them into my life purpose or how to make a living out of them. I searched and searched for an answer but I just couldn’t find it. I was trying to find this one calling and a way to devote my life to pursuing it without losing other things I deeply cherished along the way. I grasped on to all these different ideas hoping to find what I was looking for there, but ended up feeling lost again. And in that process I almost drove myself to a mental breakdown.

It wasn’t until I came to understand these truths about our purpose in life that I was able to find my place in this world:
  1. It is not limited to one passion. Our purpose can consist of various different things that make us tick and feel alive. Pursuing our calling, therefore, does not mean we must devote our whole existence to just one thing. We can, if that is what we desire. However, for most of us, it translates into more than one realm in our lives. For instance, I’ve learned that touching the lives of others through this blog is my calling just as much as raising my son into a happy and kind human being is.
  1. It doesn’t need to be grandiose. We don’t need to change the world in a dramatic way or surrender our lives to something greater than us. The more we do in service of others the more fulfilled we’ll be. No doubt about that. But finding our purpose can be just as simple as finding the bliss that motivates us to wake up every morning and engage with the world that surrounds us. Not to merely exist in this life but to live it. Bringing forth our vigor and enthusiasm and inspiring those around us to do the same.
  1. It is not always static but can change with time. Some may have been born with a clear-cut passion they want to spend their whole lives on. However, not everyone figures out their calling early in life and certainly not everyone devotes their entire existence to it. As we grow and evolve throughout the different stages in our lives we may discover new passions and desires that shift our sense of purpose and calling. We are constantly changing and developing so there is no reason why our purpose shouldn’t. What motivates us today may not do so tomorrow.
  1. It doesn’t have to align with your job or career. They say we should do what we love and money will follow. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Many times there is no professional version of our pursuit or the opportunity costs of doing so are just too high. More so, the pressure of turning our purpose into a career can end up killing our passion and inspiration.
So if you find it impossible to align your career with your purpose in life don’t believe you need to give up one or the other. You can have a job or a career that provides structure to your life, stimulates your advancement, and pays enough to secure your financial freedom while still pursuing your passions on the side in whatever ways you can. Try to find joy and meaning in whatever occupation you hold, considering the amount of time and energy you invest there. But don’t let it stop you from doing what you love.
We all have a longing for rich and engaged lives that give meaning to our existence. The difference resides in how we go about accomplishing this. And that is where our purpose lies. In finding the force that keeps us moving forward with zest and zeal. Wholeheartedly and with full spirit.
We must each find our own “shine.” And then… shine on.

7 Steps to Great Relationships

1. Respect People
Always talk to people with respect; speaking to them like you want to be spoken to. Be kind in your words and actions. Think before you speak, because once the words leave your mouth, they can't ever be taken back. Your words may be forgiven, but they will never be forgotten. When you speak harshly to someone, you put a small crack in that relationship. Too many small cracks and the relationship will crumble.

2. Be Loyal and Trustworthy
Be the kind of person that can always be counted on to do the right thing. Never do anything to betray that trust. Always be honest, and always temper your honesty with kindness. Let them know that they can always lean on you, and even their deepest secrets are safe. If you don't have trust in a relationship, you don't have anything to build on.

3. Put Others First – Be a Friend
I know it's not easy, but you need to put the needs of others first. By that very act you show how much you care, and how important that relationship is to you. When you enter a relationship with a heart that puts others first, you are blessed by the fruits that are grown from such an act. By showing a genuine interest in others, you show yourself a friend, and gain loyal, lifelong friends to yourself.

4. Don't Try and Be Someone You're not
Always strive to be your best self, but never try and be someone you're not. Relationships built upon lies and distortions will never stand. Real friends are honest and upfront with each other. If you want to have a real friend, then be a real friend. Part of being a real friend is being yourself. If you want to impress someone, impress them with your kindness and friendship.

5. Don't Take People For Granted
I think this act probably causes more hurt, resentment, or weakening of friendships than any other. We go from enjoying someone's company, really appreciating all the things they do for us, and thinking about how great they are for the things they do. Then, let a little time go by, and we stop acknowledging the good things about them. We come to expect certain things that we considered special at one time. Don't do it, it's a relationship breaker. No one wants to be taken for granted.

6. Be Forgiving
What if the one being taken for granted is you? It hurts to feel like you're not appreciated. If we aren't vigilant in caring for our relationships, these things can easily happen. That's why it is important for us to look at others with compassion and forgiveness.
Be sure to talk to the person taking you for granted. Don't let it build inside until the relationship is destroyed and irreparable. If they're a true friend they should apologize and be willing to change that.
Another trick to great relationships is good communications, and not holding grudges. Be forgiving as Christ is forgiving.

7. Be Positive and Encouraging
I love being around people who are positive and encouraging. It brings out the best in me and causes me to want to be positive and encourage to others. Can you think of a better emotional boost than to help put a smile on someone's face?


Dwelling on and being discouraged over problems will do nothing to make them better. We need to acknowledge the problem, tell that problem it's not going to define us, and then get to working finding a solution.

When someone you care about is down and hurting, you getting depressed with them will do nothing to help. What you need to do is show them compassion, be empathetic, and let them know you're there for them.
Then you need to lift them up. Help them to see some of the wonderful things about themselves and their life. Sometimes people just need to be reminded that they're special, and we believe in them even when they quit believing in themselves.

Early Detection of Diabetes and How to Reverse


Diabetes is one of the most prevalent new epidemics in the world, and one of the fastest growing diseases. One of the main reasons for this is the unhealthy lifestyle and habits that are forming by modern living.
 
It is of immense importance that everyone is aware of the signs of type II diabetes, because the best way to avoid the disease is to make an early detection and engage in actions that will prevent the diabetes from developing.
The general term for these signs is 'pre-diabetes'. The blood sugar levels are not yet on a full blown diabetes level, and can still be reversed.
 
So first, know the symptoms:
* Feeling thirsty even after drinking a lot
* Feeling weak even after resting for a sufficient amount of hours.
* Urinating more frequently, especially at night.
* Gaining weight despite no change in diet and even with exercising.
* Feeling hungry again minutes after eating.
* Skin infections take a very long time to heal.
* Blurred night vision.
* Tired
 
Tests that help in early detection:
If you recognize in yourself two or more of these symptoms, then it is crucial that you have yourself tested to see if you are indeed on the path to diabetes. There are basically 2 tests you can take:
 
1. Fasting Plasma Glucose Test:
This test requires you to fast for about 8-10 hours. It would be best to give your blood sample in the early morning before breakfast. This test checks your how well your body maintains glucose levels and interacts with it. If your results show that your blood glucose levels are between 100-125 ml/dl, then you are either pre-diabetic or already suffering from early diabetes. If they blood sugar levels are less than 100 ml/dl, then you are safe from the disease.

2. Oral Glucose Test
Two hours after your breakfast or lunch, the lab technician will take a blood sample. If the test results show your blood sugar level between 140-199 ml/dl, then you are pre-diabetic. If it is less than 140 - you are free from it.

Ways to reverse the process.
How to Reverse the Symptoms of Diabetes:
Many will suggest you start taking medication to solve your pre-diabetes problem. While these medications will lower your blood-sugar levels, they are not a long term solution. A long term reversal of the symptoms requires:
 
1. Daily exercise:
If you have pre-diabetic symptoms, it's crucial that you start exercising every day. This will help your muscles to become less dependant on insulin, and will help maintain your blood sugar level. Put aside 30-45 minutes a day for exercise.
 
2. Watch you carb consumption.
To reverse the symptoms, cut down on your simple carbs, as the body will break them down to fats and energy that will be converted to fat. You need complex carbs like multi-grain bread, wheat bread, brown pasta, brown rice and boiled potatos. Exclude white bread, candy, chocolate, pasta, rice, cookies and cakes from your daily consumption.
 
3. Drink LOTS of water.
I can't stress this enough - stay hydrated. You need to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to wash the toxins from your body through urination.
 
4. Change to a high fiber diet
Fiber doesn't only bring down your blood sugar levels but will also help you lose weight. A high fiber diet with plenty of water will make you feel full without raising your blood sugar levels. Legumes, raw fruit and vegetables have a high amount of fiber in them.
 
5. Don't Let Stress Get to You.
This may be the hardest one. You must avoid high stress levels if you wish to reverse your diabetes symptoms. Practice yoga, try meditating and get plenty of sleep.
 
These are the natural ways to fight early diabetes, and have no side effects. So make sure you stick to a healthy diet, daily exercise and watch what you eat to keep diabetes away.

In The Way I See It

We had a baby! A little baby boy who finally arrived in our lives after nine long months of waiting. I was still exhilarated with the way his little hand had wrapped around my finger. But the joy was short lived. As we waited to get back home after the delivery, we were jolted with unknown complications my wife had developed; a blood disorder that threatened to take her life away.

I had the baby in one hand and my other hand outstretched holding my wife’s. I was dumbfounded and wrecked as she was wheeled away for scans and tests. My happiness and my new family life turned upside-down in the span of a few short hours. I was forced to be functional even as this unexpected shock hit us.
My wife is my rock, but I had to stand strong without her. I had to stand strong for her. All of it felt completely out of place.

When you fear for your loved ones, you usually fear the worst. I wasn’t an exception. I was beginning to think, if only I could turn back all those years and live every moment with her…

We have all lived with this moronic assumption that gadgets and social media bring people closer, but I have seen it wreck face to face interactions even in the most important relationship of my life. Thanks to my work and my gadgets, I had spared no time for my wife. It took a jolt to realise her importance in my life – a jolt that I don’t even wish upon my worst enemy.

My wife and I have known each other for over eight years. It started off as friendship, then love, and finally marriage. On the surface, it seemed like we were progressing, but the sad truth was how we had slipped into a slow degeneration. We stopped interacting and lacked time for each other. No, no. I stopped interacting and I lacked time for her.

I have always been someone who is not socially adept, and speaks less. And she is the complete opposite. When I returned from work, I spent more time on the laptop and mobile phone. She would be so upset about how we had drifted apart. But I mostly dismissed these notions, believing that couples must forego romance for practicality as marriages progress. I was so wrong.

A year ago, we moved to the United States for work. With no friends or family around us, we only had each other. It brought us closer. For the first time in eight years, I was beginning to realise how much I had missed out on. I had such a wonderful partner. My best friend was at home, and I had looked everywhere for emotional support when the chips were down. If only I had put that laptop or phone aside and spoken to her, I wouldn’t have greyed so early.
The arrival of the baby brought us closer still. I was rediscovering my love for her. And I wanted to make up for seven years of neglect. That is when it struck like a lightning. Our moments of loving togetherness suddenly seemed like they would disappear forever.

I just wish… I just wish I had switched off that phone while she was talking to me, turned off that cricket match. I wish I hadn’t replied to that office email late at night and listened to her talk about how her day instead. I could’ve even stayed up long enough to keep her company while she cleaned up the kitchen. I should’ve held back my hunger so I could dine with her.

What wouldn’t I do to get back every minute that I didn’t get to spend with her?
You always regret everything in hindsight. I couldn’t get anything back. As my wife was being wheeled back into yet another room in the hospital, the doctor wore a grim expression. My face was flushed, heart thumping. The doctor told us that the situation was serious… but curable. Relief rushed over me in a huge wave. But I was still scared. I was still bloody terrified of losing the most wonderful woman in my life.

That’s when I decided – I don’t care about what happens; I won’t let the woman of my life go away, at any cost. I sat down next to my wife with tears in my eyes. And I told her,
 “We are going to fight this out. We have to see him grow and walk into the sunset together”.
She had never seen me cry, before now. Her eyes welled up too, but she wouldn’t show it. She knew it would break me.
I was fighting tears, but I couldn’t. Here is the love of my life, who has almost left me. Here is my son, who might never see the most amazing woman of his life.

Right now, she is undergoing a long and painful treatment. I sit beside her for hours while she gets her IVs done. I don’t flinch. It doesn’t seem to bore me. I hate remembering the past, how I couldn’t even sit for 10 minutes just to talk to her. I don’t think I can ever make it up to her, but I’m trying to be a better husband.

I’m away from work, but it’s not occupying my mind. I don’t bother to check my emails. In the past, I wouldn’t ever miss responding to an email. But, right now, there are only two things that ring in my head – my wife and my kid. We haven’t had the chance to celebrate our son’s arrival in the past two weeks. But we know that this, too, shall pass and we will have a long and happy life together. This will only make us stronger. We are taking it slow and progress is made every day. But it’s a long haul.

I remember the lines of Robert Browning that I used to quote to impress my wife eight years back:
“Grow old along with me
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made;”
I didn’t understand it then. It took a tragic moment for me to realise the enormity of it.

I’m not giving a sermon here. But I hope everyone understands that WhatsApp can wait. An office email can wait. A cricket match can wait. Liking a photo on Facebook can wait. But don’t let your love and loved ones wait. You never know when it’s too late. Happiness is incomplete if you don’t have the right people to share it with. As I look at her sleep every night, I tell myself that every moment from here on is hers and I am going make it count. Others can wait. Even my son. Had it not been for my wife who urged me not to give up on my writing, I wouldn’t have penned this down either.

Cherish your loved ones, and give them what they deserve – it’s a hard lesson to learn if you take them for granted.

Story: The Rabit in Swimming School






The funny thing about life is that you realise the value of something only when it begins to leave you. As my hair turned from black to salt and pepper and finally salt without the pepper, I have begun to realise the importance of youth. At the same time, I have begun to truly appreciate some of the lessons I have learnt along the way.

The first lesson I have learnt is that, we must always begin with our strengths. From the earliest years of our schooling, everyone focuses on what is wrong with us. There is an imaginary story of a rabbit. The rabbit was enrolled in a rabbit school. Like all rabbits, it could hop very well but could not swim. At the end of the year, the rabbit got high marks in hopping but failed in swimming.

The parents were concerned. They said: "Forget about hopping. You are anyway good at it. Concentrate on swimming." They sent the rabbit for tuitions in swimming. And guess what happened? The rabbit forgot how to hop! As for swimming, have you ever seen a rabbit swim?

While it is important for us to know what we are not good at, we must also cherish what is good in us. That is because it is only our strengths that can give us the energy to correct our weaknesses.

The second lesson I have learnt is that a rupee earned is of far more value than five found. My friend was sharing with me the story of his eight year-old niece. She would always complain about the breakfast. The cook tried everything possible, but the child remained unhappy. Finally, my friend took the child to a supper market and brought one of those ready-to-cook packets. She had to cut the packet and pour water in the dish. After that, it took two minutes in the microwave to be ready. The child found the food to be delicious! The difference was that she had cooked it!

In my own life, I have found that nothing gives us as much satisfaction as earning our rewards. What is gifted or inherited follows the rule ‘Come easy, go easy'. I guess we only know the value of what we have if we have struggled to earn it.


The third lesson I have learnt is no one hits a hundred every time. Life has many challenges. You win some and lose some.

You must enjoy winning. But do not let it go to the head. The moment it does, you are already on your way to failure. And if you do encounter failure along the way, treat it as an equally natural phenomenon. Don't beat yourself for it or anyone else for that matter! Accept it, look at your own share in the problem, learn from it and move on.

The important thing is , when you lose, do not lose the lesson. The fourth lesson I have learnt is the importance of humility.

Sometimes, when you get so much in life, you really start wondering whether you deserve all of it. This brings me to the value of gratitude. We have so much to be grateful for.

Our parents, our teachers and our seniors have done so much for us, that we can never repay them. Many people focus on the shortcomings, because obviously no one can be perfect. But it is important to first acknowledge what we have received.Nothing in life is permanent but when a relationship ends, rather than becoming bitter, we must learn to savour the memory of the good things while they lasted.

The fifth lesson I learnt is that we must always strive for excellence. One way of achieving excellence is by looking at those better than ourselves.

Keep learning what they do differently. Emulate it. But excellence cannot be imposed from outside. We must feel the need from within.

It must become an obsession. It must involve not only our mind but also our heart and soul. Excellence is not an act but a habit.

I remember the inspiring lines of a poem which says, that you reach must always exceeds your grasp. That is heaven on earth. Ultimately, your only competition is with yourself.

The sixth lesson I have learnt is never to give up in the face of adversity. It comes on you suddenly without warning. One can either succumb to self-pity, wring one's hands in despair or decide to deal with the situation with courage and dignity. Always keep in mind that it is only the test of fire that makes fine steel.

A friend of mine shared this incident with me. His eight-year old daughter was struggling away at a jigsaw puzzle. She kept at it for hours but could not succeed.

Finally, it went beyond her bedtime. My friend told her: "Look, why don't you just give up? I don't think you will complete it tonight. Look at it another day."

The girl looked up. There was a strange look in her eyes. "But, dad, why should I give up? All the pieces are there! I have just got to put them together!".


If we preserve long enough, we can put any problem in it's perspective.

The Positive Psychology class taught by Ben Shahar attracts 1400 students per semester and 20% of Harvard graduates take this elective course. According to Ben Shahar, the class - which focuses on happiness, self-esteem and motivation - gives students the tools to succeed and face life with more joy.

This 35-year-old teacher, considered by some to be "the happiness guru", highlights in his class 14 key tips for improving the quality of our personal status and contributing to a positive life:

* Thank God for everything you have: * Write down 10 things you have in your life that give you happiness. Focus on the good things!

🚩Tip 2.
* Practice physical activity * Experts say exercising helps improve mood. 30 minutes of exercise is the best antidote against sadness and stress.

* Breakfast: * Some people miss breakfast for lack of time or not to get fat. Studies show that breakfast gives you energy, helps you think and perform your activities successfully.

* Assertive *: Ask what you want and say what you think. Being assertive helps improve your self-esteem. Being left and remaining silent creates sadness and hopelessness.

* Spend your money on experiences..a study found that 75% of people felt happier when they invested their money in travel, courses and classes; While only the rest said they felt happier when buying things.

* Face your challenges *: Studies show that the more you postpone something, the more anxiety and tension you generate. Write short weekly lists of tasks and complete them.

Story: The Newlywed Youg Man Speaks to His Father

A newlywed young man was sitting on the porch on a hot,
humid day, sipping iced tea with his father.

As he talked about adult life, marriage, responsibilities, and
the father thoughtfully stirred the ice cubes in his glass and
cast a clear, sober look on his son.

"Never forget your friends," he advised,
"they will become more important as you get older."

"Regardless of how much you love your family and the children
you happen to have, you will always need friends.

"Remember to go out with them occasionally,
do activities with them, call them ..."

"What strange advice!" Thought the young man.
"I just entered the married world, I am an adult and
surely my wife and the family that we will start will be
everything I need to make sense of my life."

Yet he obeyed his father.

This Test Can Diagnose 13 Types of Cancer With Just 1 Drop of Blood

According to new research led by a team from the Tokyo-based National Cancer Center Japan, a single drop of blood can now be used to identify thirteen types of cancer.
Toray Industries Inc., is one of the companies that has come up with this new testing method. Its team of researchers (among many others) used blood from more than 40,000 patients, to identify the microRNA (miRNA) that can be used to diagnose cancer.
A single drop of blood can now be used to diagnose 13 different types of cancer.
The role of miRNA
miRNA is a substance that plays a key role in gene expression. It is excreted from cells into the blood and is responsible for gene regulation.
Basically, the difference between the miRNA of the normal cells and cancer cells is used for the detection of cancer. Currently, researchers can use this method to identify cancer of the following types:
  1. Stomach
  2. Colorectal
  3. Esophageal
  4. Pancreatic
  5. Liver
  6. Biliary tract
  7. Lung
  8. Breast
  9. Ovarian
  10. Prostate
  11. Bladder
  12. Bone and soft tissue tumours
  13. Glioma

New Tests

The clinical study of this new research – which is set to start next month – aims to use fresh blood from more than 3000 people, including from both patients and healthy people. This will be done in order to eliminate any sort of error that could have occurred in the initial results which used preserved blood.

One of the concerns is that the properties of miRNA in preserved blood may differ from that of fresh blood.

The Benefits and Potential
The test, although its rather efficient, would still require further examination in order to confirm results.  However it has been stated by Takahiro Ochiya, Head of the Molecular and Cellular Medicine Division, that in the future it will be possible to bring into light the stages of cancer and its characteristics without further tests.
The study began in the mid of July after the centre's research and ethics screening committee granted permission for it. After a minimum of three years, these new tests will be put to more practical and mainstream use as well, once the central government gives the go-ahead for this.

Story:​ Charity wrapped in Dignity!

She asked him, "How much are you selling the eggs for?"

The old seller replied to her, "Rs.5/- for one egg, Madam."

She said to him, "I will take 6 eggs for Rs.25/- or I will leave."

The old seller replied, "Come take them at the price you want. May God  bless us, and maybe this is a good beginning because I have not yet sold to anyone."

She took it and walked away feeling she has won. She got into her fancy car and went to pick her friend, and invited her to a restaurant.

She and her friend sat down and ordered what they like. They ate a little and left a lot of what they ordered.

Then she went to pay the bill. The bill was Rs.1,200/-. She gave him Rs. 1,300/- and said to the owner of the restaurant: "Keep the change."

This story may seem normal to the owner of the restaurant. But it is very painful for the eggs' seller.
