You went shopping, looking for that “perfect dress” for an event that’s coming up soon. But something feels uneasy about your shopping trip. It feels like everywhere you turn; every store you visit you feel like somebody's watching you. They may turn away when you look in their direction, or if you speed up your walk it seems like someone is doing the same thing.

You finally arrive home, watching in your rearview mirror just to make sure you’re not being followed. When you mention your concerns to a close friend, they tell you you’re imagining things. But you know better. You know the feeling of having someone following your every move. You know you’re being stalked.

First, don’t panic. Realize that while it may be true, it doesn’t necessarily mean that harm will come to you. But you do need to be on alert, and be careful that if someone is stalking you, you need to find out who that person is. Here are some ways to know if you’re being stalked and what you can do.

Stalking is not Normal

Many people never report being stalked. It’s become a “common behavior” – but it isn’t normal at all. For most people stalking never comes to harm. But just feeling uncomfortable knowing someone is stalking you is enough to do something about it.

Change Privacy Settings

People and stalkers like to troll on Facebook and other sites to learn more about someone. If you post a lot of information on dates, where you’ve gone and where you’re going, stalkers will take that information and use it to connect with you. So, the first thing to do is change your Facebook privacy settings – as well as other sites, where you control who gets to read your posts. Do it on all of your social apps.

Always Contacting You

If someone is relentlessly trying to contact you, they may be a stalker. When you don’t reply to their texts or emails, they start contacting you more frequently. They may even start posting things on your timeline for others to read, putting you in a bad light. Find out who they are with Nuwber. Put in their name, email or phone number that they’re using, just to see the real identity of the person trying to contact you. You may find they have other phone numbers or email addresses and you can use this info to block all of their numbers. Nuwber will even alert you if the person has a police record or criminal background. If you’re very concerned, contact the authorities.

Beware of Social Media and Apps

Social media is where stalkers hang out to get information on your whereabouts. Don’t post your itinerary on social media – like “you’re going shopping at XYZ Mall today.” Other stalkers try to put spyware and stalk ware on your smartphone. Unfortunately, more than 25% of people don’t use the “lock screen” feature on the smartphone. If you leave it unattended, it will only take a minute for someone to add an app without your knowledge. Another way they get into your phone is by emails that pretend to show you know the sender. They get info from your social media posts and contact you. You need to secure your devices with antivirus protection – including your smartphone. Some of the top smartphone ones include McAfee Mobile Security.  Bitdefender Mobile Security and Norton Mobile Security. Some phones have built-in antivirus security, so check your phone. On your laptop or other device, use one of the Avast, Norton Antivirus or Microsoft Defender.

The biggest problem with stalkers is that they often become violent, especially when rebuffed or rejected by the person they’re stalking. That’s why if you have concerns in any way about the individual who is stalking you, take the information you have and share it with the police or other authorities. Put a stop to it before any serious problems arise.
