10 Self Improvement Activities

These self improvement activities will help you become more productive, get into the positive state of mind and achieve better quality of life.
In this article you will also find out how to use your energy effectively, what is the quickest way to achieve personal growth and how to excel in every activity.
1st Self Improvement Activity: Use your energy on important things
If you want to succeed in life, you should not waste your energy on activities that do not bring any benefits.
Such useless activities include surfing the internet without any purpose, watching TV, worrying and wasting money.
When you are involved in such activities, you have no or little energy left for activities that can create a better future. It is worth prioritising and accomplishing important tasks first, and then if you still have enough energy, you may decide to do the unimportant.
2nd Self Improvement Activity: Focus on one task at a time
If you want to get perfect results, you should only concentrate on one activity. This way all your energy will go into it and you will accomplish it perfectly.
If you waste your energy on several things at the same time, you will get average results because you will divide your energy between the activities.
3rd Self Improvement Activity: Control your thinking
To avoid chaos in your mind resulting in chaos in the outside world, you should try to observe your thoughts. Once you start doing that, you will notice how many negative thoughts you get daily.
By observing negative thinking you will be able to emotionally disengage from it. As a result, negative thinking will affect you less and you will notice that your days are getting more peaceful and positive.
4th Self Improvement Activity: Get organised
When you live in an organised manner, you do not suffer from stress and your life is peaceful and balanced.
To start living this way, you should start planning your day in advance. This will eliminate any stress caused by being late to a meeting or forgetting to complete some task.
You should also live in tidiness because by keeping your home clean you also keep your mental state clear and peaceful. Such mental state will benefit you in many ways, including improved memory and less negativity.
5th Self Improvement Activity: Live in the present
Although this self improvement activity may seem strange to you, it is a very important activity that many ignore. The majority of people do not live in the present. They either dwell on their past or daydream about the future. They seem to forget the most important time of all – the present.
You should enjoy every present moment because your current state of mind always manifests in the outside world, creating your future accordingly.
Therefore if your main mood is very positive, you will experience only happy days. However, if you dwell on negative thoughts, you are sure to encounter many obstacles and misfortunes in the present and days to come.
6th Self Improvement Activity: Complete each task in a perfect manner
Whenever you are working on some project, try to accomplish it in the best way possible. Always ask yourself 'Is this project turned out as perfect as it could possibly be?' If the answer is no, try to correct or add something to it until there is nothing that you can improve.
This way you will make sure that each single task you accomplish is done in an excellent manner. By doing this you will create successful future because you cannot possibly fail if you only get perfect results.
Also, when you entirely focus on one task excluding everything else, you will notice that you start enjoying the task. If you concentrate on the task but still do not enjoy it, that means that you probably see the task as a means to an end rather than the process.
You should start focusing on the process itself to find enjoyment in the task. Such enjoyment will fuel motivation and you will accomplish everything quicker and better.
If you enjoy your work, you will put only positive energy into it. As a result, your completed tasks will bring you success.
7th Self Improvement Activity: Challenge yourself
Nothing develops you more than challenges. Challenges force you to shift your comfort zone, experience new situations and make you grow. Without challenges life would be very boring and depressing.
Challenges are necessary for every human being who is seeking quality life. Only through trial and error you realise who you really are, which activities you like and what preferences you have.
You can easily measure the success of a person by the amount of challenges s/he had.
8th Self Improvement Activity: Read personal development books
There is nothing more important than searching information about self improvement. Without reading any self improvement books or articles you cannot improve yourself.
I have written an article about 20 life changing personal development books. It might be worth checking them out. Many of them are available for free! Click here to read this article.
9th Self Improvement Activity: Socialize only with positive people
Positive people can inspire, empower and make you happy. It is so much worth to be at least once in a while with positive people rather than constantly spend time with negative friends or relatives.
If you spend your days with, for example, lazy people, you may notice that you are becoming lazy.
If all your friends' main qualities are negative, try to avoid all of them. This way you will not be affected in a negative way and after some time will start attracting positive people.
10th Self Improvement Activity: Exercise
Daily exercise develops determination, focus and patience. It improves your health and strengthens your body. It makes you more active, positive and invincible.
People who exercise every day are always perceived as strong-willed and disciplined.
These personal improvement activities are sure to put you on the track to success. I hope that you will apply the steps in this article and, as a result, will greatly improve the quality of your life.

Your Phone is too dirty

Your phone is dirtier than a toilet seat

Mobile phones carry 10 times more bacteria than most toilet seats, so it shouldn't be surprising that a man in Uganda reportedly contracted Ebola after stealing one.

He stole the phone from a quarantined ward of a hospital, near the site of a recent Ebola outbreak, reports said.

But regardless of your proximity to an Ebola outbreak, your mobile phone is still probably pretty grimy, said Charles Gerba, a microbiologist at the University of Arizona.

"They've got quite a bit on them," Gerba said. "When's the last time you cleaned your cellphone?"

While toilets tend to get cleaned frequently, because people associate the bathroom with germs, mobile phones and other commonly handled objects — like remote controls— are often left out of the cleaning routine.

Mobile phones pick up germs all the time, Gerba said. "I see people talk on their phone on toilets."

However, the amount of germs on a phone isn't a problem — it's the sharing of phones between people. Without sharing, each phone carries just one set of germs, and won't get its owner sick, Gerba said.

The problem with phones is that we're in constant contact with them, and they spend a lot of time in close proximity to our faces and mouths. And, because it's an electronic device, most people are hesitant about cleaning them.

This is also this case with remote controls, which, Gerba noted, are also often used by people when they're sick. Remotes are more frequently shared, too, so they're usually even worse than phones for spreading germs, he said.

Other common culprits that are hotspots of unseen disease include office phones, shopping carts and the first-floor buttons of elevators, he said.

To limit the spread of diseases from phones or other objects, try not to share them, or wipe them down with an antibacterial wipe if you do. While sprays might damage the equipment, a gentle wipe should do the trick, Gerba said.

The Lady and The Sales Man

By Junaid Tahir
At one of the big shopping centers of town this lady was speaking quite loudly, probably trying to impress others in surroundings, .
"Show me the latest shoes you have"
"Here are a couple of latest shoes ma'am" The sales person said while pointing his hand towards the shelf.
"No, i didnt ask for these shoes, I want some latest designs which are hot now a days"
"Maam, the one i showed you are the latest and most sold shoes in the market... Please look in this shelf, here are some other latest shoes"
"No, No i want the latest new designs which everyone is buying in UK"
"But maam, this is Pakistan and all big stores here follow local trends"
"ok leave it, show me some ladies bags"
"Here are some nice bags maam" the sales person showed a couple of bags"
"No, no, i didnt ask you to show me this kind of bags, I need some big bags"
"How about these bags maam" "No no, i didnt ask you to show me this much big bags, Ok leave it, show me some good shirts"

"What type of shirts ma'am"
" show me some latest shirts of UK Fashion..."

I was listening to this conversation while shopping for my kids yesterday. This is what i observed:
1- The Lady was not focussed about her shopping plan because she changed her demands three times within 45 seconds of time. She was demostrating unstable behavior and bothering the sales person and other people in surroundings.
2- She was not specific in her demands. She was expecting the salesman to show her products of UK market though she was in Pakistan which she could have asked at the start of conversation and left the market without wasting everyone's time . Later she didnt elaborate her demands clearly on how big bag she was looking for which again resulted in time wastage for both.
3- The lady was reactive in her nature as she was saying No, No in every second sentence she spoke which was an unethical way of conversation.

This is just one example from our routine life though we experience repeated cases of miscommunication which sometimes lead to brawl if both parties are not patient. The message here is that we must learn the art of effective communication if we want us to be heared and responded properly. The sales person in this example was on job so he was behaving nicely. Had this been the case of two colleagues or any other non-job conversation; the situation might have been tough.
Below is an extract from my article Effective Communication. Original Article can be read by clicking here

You might have experienced misunderstanding in family or official life on several occasions. The reason is obvious that either of the person didn't state his/her stance in clear fashion or perceive it clearly. So where does the fault lie and how can we improve? Let us study the below recommendations which need to be considered by Communicator or Listener in order to have solid common understanding and avoid communication gaps.

1.     Improve vocabulary: Every word has its own deep meanings. For example there is a difference between 'Hate' and 'Dislike'. Likewise, there is a difference between 'Should' and 'Must'. To enhance vocabulary you should learn new words and understand the meanings of synonyms and antonyms as well. You can use online dictionaries or built-in features of MS Word (right click on a word to know synonyms/antonyms. article written by Junaid.Tahir
2.    Listen carefully and listen more. If you listen more you are absorbing more and improving your level of comprehension. If you speak more you are on the verge of confusing others. So listen more and speak less. And when you speak, speak slowly and softly. Ask if you have communicated clearly or more elaboration is required.
3.    If you don't understand something, ask for elaboration. It is said that "If you doubt at first, doubt again and clear it"
4.    Put yourself in others' shoes to understand their perspective. Think win-win. Analyze the situation from everyone's perspective. Consider all the stake holders and consider their emotions. Develop Emotional Intelligence skill. Google it today. Article written by Junaid.Tahir
5.    If you are writing Emails/Letters/Fax then re-read after you are done with typing. Considering point-4 while you review your article. You can ask someone to comment on what you have written.
6.    Avoid hard words to avoid bad taste: For example instead of saying 'Rejected' use the word 'Not Approved'. When you say No, you should sound as if you wanted to say Yes but due to specific issue you can't say yes. So if that issue is addressed, you will be saying Yes and Saying Approved. Article written by Junaid.Tahir
7.    Avoid too many arguments. Convince or get convinced. If things gets complicated, take a break… engage some well-wishers to assist resolve the matter"

Some other recommended articles:

The world’s first coffee machine that takes orders by SMS

The fact that the technology industry and coffee go hand in hand is well known by now. So it was only a matter of time before someone came along and combined the two in a rather impressive fashion. Introducing Textpresso. The world's first espresso machine that accepts orders by text, to make your brew and have it waiting for you when you're ready.

The Textpresso uses Arduino technology (aka the internet of things) to run via an Android application, where you can send messages from your dekstop. It's been built by ZipWhip who specialise in cloud-based text messaging.

You can check it out in action in the video below (excuse the cheesiness in the clip):

And you can even add a message you want with your coffee which will be painted on using edible text. Or if you don't add your own message, your cup will be printed with the last three numbers of your phone number, so you can identify your own brew on the waiting tray.

Unfortunately, the Texpresso isn't available commercially as Zipwhip are keeping it, cleverly, entirely for themselves to draw attention to their creation and get people going to the site or visiting their office to try it out for themselves. They have, however, made the manual javascript for the machine available online here.

Change your life style to save your life

The maintenance of body weight is very important as far as the health fitness is concerned. People who have got abnormal weight are susceptible to diseases very easily. The reason for abnormal body weight is life style. In today's life style men can perform works with out much exertion and for conveyance they can rely on their own vehicles and other alternatives. They have no need to walk to reach their destinations. To make things available just a phone call is sufficient. Then the only thing they have to do is eat and sit simply. This is the reason for abnormal weight in human beings. Over weight is the cause of numerous diseases like Diabetics and Hypertension. If men become prey to these diseases once they cannot escape from their hands till the last minute of their life. They can continue living by taking medicines regularly. The doctors also instruct them to control the diet and body weight.   Henceif people can control their body weight by controlling their diet in advance they can avoid the intake of medicines and thereby they can save financially alsoMen can control their body weight by means of exercises, daily walk and diet control. By controlling weight they can always feel as rejuvenated and free of various health problems. By reducing body weight, the excess fat content in the body will be removed considerably. This will enable people to bring cholesterol under desirable level. Cholesterol is the killer factor for causing heart blocks and thereby cardiac arrest. Hence this is a favorable factor for avoiding various heart problems. If the cholesterol level can be brought under control the blood pressure also can be minimized ideally. In this way by reducing excess body weight, all major diseases can be kept away and this will enable men to lead a very comfortable life

The secret to giving presentations

Many of us have experienced sitting through presentations that are dull and severely lacking in star quality. What should be a time to shine in front of colleagues, clients and the boss is often an unpleasant experience that many find hard to thrive in, whether in a one-on-one situation or in front of a whole lecture theatre. So, when trying to give a presentation, what can you do to make sure you impress?

• Use positive body language "Making eye contact shows that you are confident and gives people confidence in you," says Richard Israel, co-author of Mind Chi. "Keep your hands out of your pockets and keep both feet on the ground. Fidgeting is a giveaway sign that you are not happy."

• Rehearse your presentation "People die on stage because they think they can wing it," says Paul McGee, author ofSelf-Confidence. "They think they know it because their PowerPoint is done, and don't realise that rehearsing is time well spent. I use the phrase, 'Avoid the hearse, go and rehearse'."

• Think about the audience Remember who you are giving the presentation to and what their needs are. McGee says: "The pitfall most people fall into is forgetting who the audience is and why they are giving the presentation."

• Use stories "The messages that stick are those told with stories," says McGee. "Tell stories from your own experiences, ideally. It's a tactic used by a lot of politicians."

• Hesitate at the end of sentences "Ending sentences with'you know', ummms and aaahs drives audiences crazy," reckons Israel. "Get someone you know to write down whether you have annoying habits when you present. If they keep a tick sheet of your habits in presentations it will help your brain to change."

• Read from a script "Reading a speech from a piece of paper is the worst thing you can do, especially if you lose your place," says Israel. Using only brief headings will mean you do not lose eye contact and will make your presentation more spontaneous.

• Bore your audience "If you cram too much content into the time available, people get brain overload," says McGee. "On slides use words rather than sentences. Some highly intelligent people use PowerPoint appallingly. If you use PowerPoint as a prop, with a dozen sentences that people cannot read, your personality will be lost."

Power of Positive Talk & Encouragement

A man was lost while driving through the countryside. As he tried to reach for the map, he accidentally drove off the road into a ditch. Though he wasn't injured, his car was stuck deep in the mud. So the man walked to a nearby farm to ask for help. "Warwick can get you out of that ditch," said the farmer, pointing to a Person standing in a field. The man looked at the Person and looked at the farmer who just stood there repeating, "Yep, old Warwick can do the job." The man figured he had nothing to lose. The two men and the Person made their way back to the ditch. The farmer hitched the Person to the car. With a snap of the reins, he shouted, "Pull, Fred! Pull, Jack! Pull, Ted! Pull, Warwick!" Go ahead. And the Person pulled that car right out of the ditch. The man was amazed. He thanked the farmer, patted the mule, and asked, "Why did you call out all of those names before you called Warwick?" The farmer grinned and said, "Old Warwick is blind. As long as he believes he's part of a team, he doesn't mind pulling." You see all it matters is encouragement and a sense of care to say "You can do it". If so, you would witness incredible job

Top 10 Lessons to Learn from Failure

"When you reach an obstacle, turn it into an opportunity. You have the choice. You can overcome and be a winner, or you can allow it to overcome you and be a loser. The choice is yours and yours alone. Refuse to throw in the towel. Go that extra mile that failures refuse to travel. It is far better to be exhausted from success than to be rested from failure." – Mary Kay Ash

Failure has several assorted interpretations that can be taken as a precious learning experience, source of inspiration and an opportunity to start intelligently. It can be perceived as a worthless obstacle and insurmountable barrier to the way of destination – it is defined according to the interpreter's matrix of mind. Failures might result into temporary defeats and disappointments but resting on it will instigate ignorance about your dispositions and summon everlasting regrets upon realization in the coming phases of life. Don't be afraid to fall, it begets courage while taking risks and initiates to come out from your elongated comfort zone to collect virtue, benevolence, wisdom, generosity and honesty, laying on the rough surface of failures.

You steal a handful of patience, perseverance, and decisiveness from failures.

While enduring and overcoming the process of failures, you develop a rational outlook with a courageous soul that eventually leads you to success. Patience is your focused energy and silent function that accelerates the process of your success.

Note: Don't extend your patience for prolonged period of time that you become a coward. Don't justify it as the virtue of waiting; it will make you idle and lazy. Instead, use it as your determination that processes your energy silently, steadily and positively.

Read about any greatest personality, you will come to know that they all expressed humility. Their principles of living greatly and bravely lie hidden in their ability to face difficulties with humility and accept the truth without being over smart. The course of failures replaces your fool-self, that blindly shouts 'I'm so amazing', by humility which silently makes you smart and strong to go the extra mile. If it fails to do so, then you live insecure about your inadequacies and humility has no relationship with insecurities or inadequacies.
So it is your failure that teaches you to embrace humility to feel tranquility of heart.

Pursue your passion

Whoever you are – a student, a businessman, a musician, an athlete – if you are not a man of your passion, you simply are a man of buried force and possibility. Consistent failures don't always mean you have to be patient, or success will arrive to you one day, it can also be a hint that you are not going for your passion. Recognize it first, then, it does not matter how much struggle you are to undergo or how many times you fail because at the end of the day, you will be the winner.

Greatness lies in pursuing your own dreams, understanding your own plan and walking on your own path; and not by chasing someone else's dreams or footsteps.

"Without passion man is a mere latent force and possibility, like the flint which awaits the shock of the iron before it can give forth its spark." Henri Frederic Amiel

Necessity of a proper planning

Time is the most accessible and common thing to be wasted. Failure poses a question 'Do you have a perfect planning?' Through prototyping or architecting and researching your plan, you are actually visualizing and experiencing the way to reaching your destination. Planning and speed together breed the momentum, inspire to stay focused, fight the difficulties, embrace failures, endure the pain to win. It is failure that assists you in figuring out the well-planned and thought out vision.

"Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success." – Stephen A. Brennan

If you are truly familiar with the virtues of failure, then you realize that it does not take your guts and spirit out of your soul; it rather puts strong faith and perseverance in your devotion for passion. Faith, as a result of failures, strengthens your potential, prepares you to go beyond your defined boundary, whispers you for one more try when 'Give Up' stands in front of you demanding your courage, lighting up your true knowledge within the heart to lead you to the achievement.

"When you are on the edge of 'Darkness' and 'Despair' is about to knock you down, don't give up, your faith will raise you up as the brightest hope to fly you to ocean of possibilities." Don't believe only in the facts, lengthen it by having faith in invisible potential in you.

Retain your success

Success is not permanent; it is a consistent process that has to be continued. Failures teach you not to rest on your success to fall again. Keep moving and looking for the process to ensure your success lasts longer. Anyone can be successful for a variety of reasons- for sheer luck, by hard-work, persistence or replicating success of successful persons- but retaining it is the greatest challenge. Failure will always be there to remind you to rest on the process of persistence itself, not on the pause of success. So the lesson learnt is 'success is fragile and fallible and your greatness is in retaining success and not in one time success'.

Be Creative

Photo: AlicePopkorn

Failure makes you innovative. It cultivates the habit of experimenting, failing, getting up and starting once again with fresh idea and clear vision. It lets you play with various imaginary thoughts and come out with the most viable idea and extend the boundaries of possibilities from well-established facts and together they make you creative.

A series of experiments might go in vain or appear of no significance; nevertheless, don't ever stop experimenting because that's how you discover your path, invent things and become creative. The greatest scientist ever Thomas Alva Edison failed thousands of time but he never stopped experimenting.

Be Strong

It's failure that builds up your 'Never Give Up' attitude. It teaches you to paddle your own way across the ocean of troubles. It motivates you to keep running until you reach the goal, traverse the wild road and desert, and climb up the cliffs of mountain until you reach the pinnacle.

"Failure creates the path to success in return of your little courage, little more strength to endure the temporary pain and loss, and a little bit might to be still and steady."

Bring value

Failure is an alternative route that lays a foundation of better understanding for a worth-while life; it is instructive that coaches you to make the significant choices of life. While going through lessons of failures, you become a man of value, a man of perseverance, discipline and strong attitude that together make your success more glorious.
Don't disgrace the value of failure as falling intelligently is one of the greatest arts of life.

Conquer Yourself

Failures demand your persistence, commitment, consistent actions towards the accomplishment of your dream through which you learn to control your thoughts, know the mighty person dwelling inside, and eliminate jealousy, hatred, and selfishness. It ultimately makes you wise to have a better judgments and choices of life.
"It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell." Buddha
