Take control

If you don't think you can, think again. Yes, you absolutely can, and will, achieve what you sincerely desire to achieve.

Every day of your life, you've achieved something. Your choices, whatever they may have been, have brought you to where you are right now.

The choices you make today, the priorities you set and follow, will determine where your life goes next. Look forward, envision life at its very best for you and all your world, and then step squarely in that direction.

Let go of the need to pity yourself or to see yourself as some kind of victim. Reach into your unique, beautiful essence and feel the power you have to choose, to act, and to make a difference.

If you feel that life will disappoint you, it will. Yet when you choose to take control, you absolutely will make life into whatever you wish.

Expect the very best, in every moment, on every day. That's the way you will surely experience it.

Excel Tip: Inserting Background Image in Chart

T
ony sends this chart and asks if it can be done in Excel.

It sounded like a good challenge for a lazy Sunday morning. So here we go. (Posting it on Monday).

How to create a column chart with background image in Excel ?

Now I could not get an oil rig photo or that data. So I made up few numbers and used a photo of Flinders street station I took when I was in Melbourne last year.

Step 1: Arrange the data.

Arrange the data like this.

Arrange data like this - column chart with background image in Excel

Step 2: Create a column chart

Select the data, insert a stacked column chart (why not a regular column chart?, you will understand in a minute).

You will get this.

Create a simple column chart - - column chart with background image in Excel

Step 3: Set up image as background for chart's plot area

Select chart's plot area. Press CTRL+1.

Choose picture or texture fill and select the file with image you want.

Fill chart's plot area with an image - - column chart with background image in Excel

Step 4: Add dummy max-series

In your data, add a column which gives the difference between column values & axis maximum. For our test data, I choose 1,400 as axis maximum, so the dummy series values are,

Dummy data series - - column chart with background image in Excel

Now add this series to chart.

Step 5: Format the chart

Now, we are almost done. Our chart looks like below. We just need to format it.

Final chart before formatting - - column chart with background image in Excel

  1. Select the columns (any series) and press 1
  2. Adjust gap width to 0%
  3. Fill the dummy series with a chosen background color.
  4. Make the data series transparent (fill color = no color)
  5. Add borders to data series. Border color should be same as background color.
  6. Adjust the border thickness to 3pts.
  7. Adjust axis maximum to 1,400 (or any value you have selected in Step 4).
  8. Remove grid lines, legend and any un-necessary chart fluff.

Your column chart with background image is ready!

Finalized column chart with background image made using Excel

Note of caution: Go easy with images

The main purpose of a chart is to convey information. By adding a background images, sometimes your chart will be difficult to read. So I suggest you to go easy with background images.

Truth of Failure

Failure doesn't mean you are a failure…… it does mean you haven't succeeded yet

Failure doesn't mean you have accomplished nothing….. it does mean you have
learned something

Failure doesn't mean you have been a fool…… it does mean you had a lot of faith!

Failure doesn't mean you have been disgraced…… it does mean you were willing to try!

Failure doesn't mean you don't have it…… it does mean you have to do something in a different way!

Failure doesn't mean you are inferior…… it does mean you are not perfect!

Failure doesn't mean you've wasted your life….. it does mean you've a reason to start afresh!

Failure doesn't mean you should give up…… it does mean you should try harder!

Failure doesn't mean you'll never make it…… it does mean it will take a little longer!

Failure doesn't mean God has abandoned you…… it does mean God has a better idea!

Deliver Yourself

You will succeed not because you're allowed to, but because
you decide to. You will prosper not because of the hand
you've been dealt, but because of what you do with it.

You can allow yourself to be held back by what is, or you
can choose to create what can be. Whatever comes your
way is Insignificant when compared to what you make of it.

Though others may have impressive wealth and other
advantages going for them, remember this. You have you going
for you.

You have a solid, authentic purpose, and the determination
to fulfill that purpose. You have a unique perspective, and
the ability to leverage that perspective into real, lasting value.

That's more than enough to take you wherever you choose to
go, no matter what your starting point may be. Whether
circumstances favor you or not, your commitment and your
actions can always be working in your favour.

Don't waste your time obsessing over what's unfair or
unfortunate about your situation. Put all your energy into
what you can do, into the positive steps you can take, and
deliver yourself to wherever you wish to be.

"What's the matter?"

He said, "I heard the nurse say, 'It's a very simple operation, don't worry, I'm sure it will be all right."

"She was just trying to comfort you, what's so frightening about that?"

Philanthropy - The Act of Donation

Philanthropy is the act of donating. Any donation is considered philanthropy, whether it is money, property, or services. The amount donated does not matter; the act of giving any amount is considered to be philanthropy, whether it is one dollar placed directly into the hands of someone in need or a million dollars donated to a nonprofit organization. Philanthropy can be practiced by corporations and institutions, but the word is more commonly associated with an individual or a family.

A philanthropist is a person who practices philanthropy. The term is usually used to describe those that donate large sums of money, such as millions of dollars (USD). People who donate smaller sums of money are just as important, and are often sacrificing more of their disposable income than a rich person that donates a larger amount. People who donate smaller amounts of money, however, are not nearly as visible to others, and so are not usually given the title.

As previously mentioned, philanthropy can be done through the donation of money, property, or services. Each of these areas is important, and does a great deal to help others. A few examples of each are as follows:

Money.
Money can be donated directly to those in need by handing it to them, or it can be given to charities and other organizations to distribute. Many philanthropic people donate a specific percentage of their income, called a tithe. Some people choose to donate financial assets rather than money, such as donating stock certificates to a favorite university. Some philanthropists choose to give their money away when they die, putting instructions into their will as to which charitable organizations or people it should go to.

Property.
Property can be donated just like money, though not quite as easily. Not every person needs every item, and not every charity can handle every property donation. Both new and used articles of clothing are usually accepted by most charities. Other common items like strollers and electronics can be donated to charity stores, also called thrift shops. Canned or prepackaged food can be donated to soup kitchens, some shelters, and other charity centers; large amounts of unpackaged food that come directly from businesses can also be donated. Finally, special charities and the offices of larger charities have been set up to receive gifts of large property, such as automobiles and real estate.

Services.
Sometimes, people need assistance. One human being offering their time and skills to another is an example of this sort of donation. Some people donate their time by working in soup kitchens or delivering meals. Others visit people in nursing homes so that they will have company. Those with specialized knowledge can donate their skills in many different ways, such as being legal representatives for those with little money or tutoring children in need. Simple acts such as mowing another person's lawn or repairing someone else's broken stairs are both examples of benevolent actions involving service.

Self
. One of the most benevolent acts a person can do is donate a part of themselves to another, though this philanthropic act is often overlooked. For instance, blood donations are needed constantly in order to save people's lives, and can be done at local blood banks. Potential bone marrow donors need to register so that they can be matched if someone needs a transplant to live. A healthy person can donate one of their kidneys to another and still survive, though they may have complications later in life. Even in death, organs can be harvested from a donor and transplanted into those that need them, directly saving lives. Donations of one's self are some of the most altruistic and philanthropic possible, and directly alter the lives of others.

Do not panic unnecessarily:

People panic about practically everything—missed deadlines, orders not received, comments by others, fear of mistakes, negative trends. You name it and someone has panicked about it. Yet I've never seen even a single instance where the panic actually helped to solve the problem. Instead, panic is neutral at best and greatly interferes at worst. Panic tends to bring out the worst in everyone. It makes others (and you) feel tense and fearful. It increases the likelihood of mistakes, missed opportunities and miscommunications.

Nothing interferes with the creation of success and abundance like panic. When you make the commitment to stop panicking, you'll notice some incredible things happening. First, you'll notice that a vast majority of what you are most worried about will never happen, or it won't be as bad as you first thought. It was Benjamin Franklin who said, "Some terrible things happened in my lifetime – a few of which actually happened."

By avoiding the panic, you won't waste time, anxiety, and energy trying to solve what probably doesn't need solving. Second, when you learn to keep your bearings, your wisdom will come forth. In the absence of worry, answers will emerge. Instead of a head full of concerns, you'll create a head full of solutions. Finally, when you stay calm, you really do bring out the best in others. Many people react to the feelings of others. If you can maintain your bearings, chances are the people you work with will too.

To bring forth your greatest potential, eliminate panic altogether from your thinking..

Story: The manager and the worker

One day a construction supervisor from 6th floor of building was calling a worker working on the ground floor. Because of construction noice, the worker on ground floor did not hear his supervisor calling.

Then, to draw the attention of worker, the supervisor threw a 10 rupee note from up which fell right around in front of the worker.

The worker picked up the 10 rupee note, put it in his pocket & continued with his work.

Again to draw the attention of worker, the supervisor now threw 500 rupee note & the worker did the same, picked 500 rupee note, put it in his pocket & started doing his job.

Now to draw attention of the worker, the supervisor picked a small stone & threw on worker. The stone hit exactly the worker head. This time the worker looked up & the supervisor communicated with the worker.

This story is same as of our life. Lord from up wants to communicate with us, but we are busy doing our worldly jobs. Then God gives us small gifts & we just keep it without seeing from where we got it.

Then God gives us amounts (gifts) & we are the same. Just keep the gifts without seeing from where it came & without thanking God. We just say we are LUCKY.

Then when we are hit with a small stone, which we call problems, then we look up & we communicate with God.

So every time we get gifts, we should thank God immediately, and not wait till we are hit by a small stone, and then communicate with God

Dialogue with David - The Person in Anxiety and Depression

With around 1500 daily visitors on DailyTenMinutes, some people approach us for counselling regarding stress, anxiety and depression. Below is one of the most recent dialogues with a visitor named David (name changed due to privacy) which might help other visitors answering the most frequently asked questions on stress management subject.

Dear Junaid,
I have been suffering from Mental illness since 1993. but from 1993 to 2003 i was taking medicines for Gastro (Digestion) ,then from 2003 onwards till today i take medicines prescribed by Psychiatrist but i am confused weather it is mental or Gastro(Indigestion). The point is i start getting stressed and nervous quite often. So i am under constant stress.
I also get suicidal thoughts frequently but somehow i am afraid to commit suicide.
Please Junaid, help me as i am just living simply hopeless life and even my family remains disturbed.
Regards
David

Dear David,

Based on your email, below are the problems you are experiencing Frequent Mood Swings, Depression, Anxiety, Tension and Gastro.
Generally speaking stress, mood swings and getting irritated are interlinked which means, a person gets easily irritated and disturbed who is under stress. So I believe that you need some major changes in your life style in order to overcome your stress. Below are some questions which can help us analyze the situation in detail and then we can plan necessary measures to improve things out.
Below is the dialogue via email correspondence between Junaid and David:

SECTION-1: Answer these questions to find the root of your problems:

Junaid: Do you have financial problems? Are you in debt?
David: Not at all
Junaid: This is a good sign that you don’t have financial issues. A lot of people increase their stress levels due to financial problems. You must be thankful to the Lord about it. You must spend some time daily thinking about the fact that millions of people don’t have food to eat 3 times daily. This practice will improve your mental peace and give you a great feeling of contentment. Trust me, it works !!!

Junaid: Do you think too much to make others happy?
David- Yes, Extremely and i am afraid to say no.
Junaid: So, we found one of the reasons for your worries and possibly this is the root cause of several other problems you are giving birth to.
David, keeping everyone happy is not possible. Because every soul on earth is unique having completely different way of comprehension of things. You cannot  control other’s brain however you can definitely control yours.  So be honest, fair and truthful with others and try to have a clear conscience, a synced body-mind-soul and then don’t really think too much about your acts and making others happy. Having said that you must start ignoring thoughts of keeping others happy, you would start improving your mental peace tremendously.

Junaid: Do you think too much about past?
David- YES
Junaid: So this is your second problem (First being thinking too much about others). There are two things which you need to work on. First, develop the power of not looking back. Read my article by clicking here. Second is to control your wandering thoughts. You must have noticed fish in aquarium. All of the fish, keep wandering here and there with no clear purpose. Human mind does the same act exactly. However humans can control this unnecessary mind wandering. There are several approaches to control and improve the purity of your negative thoughts. For example, surrounding yourself in good people, reading great books, subscribing to good Facebook Pages, visiting self improvement websites such as DailyTenMinutes .com  etc.

Junaid: Do you think too much about future?
David- Not more but only for my single SON
Junaid: This is a natural thing. Everyone is concerned about his kids. A general advice would be not to think more than 2-3 years (except some major concerns like studies etc) because, now a days, things get changed quite often. You never know what is going to happen in next 6 months. I know some people who planned too much and one sudden event changed everything and their whole planning exercise became void. So my advice is to live in today. Enjoy what the life is offering you today. Go to market, hang out with friends, enjoy some nice dinner out side home, read some good book, visit a distant relative, explore a new city or country, visit a hill place etc.

Junaid: Do you have good relations with your spouse and kids?
David: No and totally shattered after my extra martial relationship was exposed to my wife and son both.
Junaid: This is your third problem and requires your real focus.
David, anyone can be wrong, it’s human nature. But confessing being wrong and apologize is something only brave people do. And these are the real happy people. So you must approach your wife and son for the same. You must redevelop your family’s trust in you. Read the article by clicking here. Further, another 10 points program for happy family is a highly recommended article.

Junaid: Do you have a healthy professional circumstances?
David- No but due to my mental illness  almost daily I struggle to go to my job.
Junaid: Since the reason for bad professional circumstances is stress so it would improve automatically once you overcome your stress and anxiety issues. Hence my prime suggestion is to focus on resolving your stress. However if you specifically want to work on improving your professional life. You must avoid office politics, must improve your corporate image and develop healthy relationships with your peers.

SECTION-2: Answer these questions to see if you have a healthy approach to life:

Junaid: Do you read good books?
David- No
Junaid: A highly recommended step !!! Book reading improves your vocabulary, concentration, focus, discipline, memory, creativity and reasoning skills. It builds your self-esteem, expertise, and deceases mistakes and boredom. It also improves general knowledge. Its stops your brain from getting distracted. So do visit your nearest book store and buy yourself a book on positivity, inspirational stories. humor or on a great leader of your country.

Junaid: Do you walk for 15 minutes daily or go to the park on weekend?-
David: Not at all
Junaid: This is one of the brain and body damaging habits. Walking have several advantages such as reducing blood pressure, improved digestion, cholesterol control, fresh brain, better sleep and so on. So start doing this as soon as possible; in morning or in evening. If you don’t want to go alone, try finding a partner who can convince you when you are lazy.

Junaid: Do you laugh often?  By watching funny programs or sharing jokes?
David- Yes but only in with some friends but not watching funny programmes but I enjoy listening jokes.
Junaid: This is good. Keep it up. Laughing and Smiling improves your mental health and a good way of taking you away from your problems for some time.  Remember, any small time spent away from worries is good for your physical and mental health.

Junaid: Do you have a best friend with whom you can share your feelings and discuss your problems?
David - NOT at all
Junaid: Having friends is very important in today's stressful life style. You can share your problems with them, take advice from them, hang out with them and so on. So try to make friends at work or near your home. If nothing works, try finding on internet. However refrain from extra marital relations as you have already suffered due to this.

Junaid: when was the last time you gave something in charity?
David:  I cannot recall
Junaid: People attain good spiritual and mental satisfaction when they give money in charity. Try to visit some orphan place, buy toys or clothes for the orphans or poor people near your place, buy food for a needy family, give small tips to the restaurant boy etc. I am sure the blessings of Almighty will increase in your life.

Junaid: when was the last time you rewarded yourself by buying something good for you?
David- I don't like buying for me
Junaid: I personally believe that rewarding oneself is a good idea. You don’t need to buy a costly thing for you. You can buy nice coffee cup, a new mobile phone, a nice book, a tuxedo etc. This gives you inner happiness; try.

David, I believe that with the above recommendations in both sections you will attain better life style, a higher mental peace and improved health. I highly recommend you to visit the “Stress Management” section of my website and spend 10 minutes daily to learn new tools and techniques. Stay blessed.

How To Add Live Web Pages to a PowerPoint Presentation

Have you ever wanted to demonstrate a live website during a PowerPoint presentation?  Here's how you can insert a live webpage into a PowerPoint presentation so you can show the exact content you're talking about.

No matter what you're giving a presentation about, sometimes it can be useful to show your audience information from the internet.  You could always create a screenshot of the webpage you're demonstrating, but chances are the screenshot may be out of date by the time you give your presentation.
image
A better solution is to use live information from the web in your presentation.  By default, PowerPoint doesn't support inserting a live web page, but you can easily do this with the LiveWeb add-in.
Head to the LiveWeb website (link below), and download the correct version for your version of PowerPoint.  We selected the 2007/2010 version in this test.
image
Once it's downloaded, extract the files as normal.
image
Now, in PowerPoint, open the Options window.  In PowerPoint 2010, you can do this by clicking the File button and selecting Options; in PowerPoint 2007, click the Office orb and selectOptions.
image
Select Add-Ins on the left side, then select PowerPoint Add-ins from the Manage menu, and click Go.

image
This will open the PowerPoint Add-ins window.  Click Add New to add the LiveWeb addin we downloaded previously.
image
Browse to the folder where you extracted the LiveWeb addin, and select it.
image
PowerPoint may warn you that the addon contains a macro.  Click Enable Macros to continue.

image
Now you should see LiveWeb listed in the Add-Ins window, and you're ready to add a live webpage to your PowerPoint presentation.
image

Using LiveWeb in PowerPoint

Now that LiveWeb is installed, you're ready to insert live internet data in your presentations.  From the Insert tab, select Web Page from the LiveWeb section.
image
This will open a quick Wizard interface that will help you insert a webpage into your presentation.
image
Enter the website you'd like to visit in the first line, then click the Add button.  Make sure to include http:// in front of the website address.  Once you've added the website you wish to visit, click Next.
image
LiveWeb will automatically refresh the web page, but if you want you can uncheck the box.  Click Next to continue.
image
Now choose how much of the slide you want the webpage to cover, and select where you want to position the page.  You can always change this later if you like.
image
Once it's finished, click Finish to return back to PowerPoint.
image
LiveWeb will let you know it successfully added the web page to your slide.
image
You'll now see a Windows 98-style logo in your slide, showing where your live webpage will be located.
image
Feel free to resize or move the webpage section in your slide however you want.
image
To view the actual web content, you'll need to start a slideshow.  Click the slideshow button at the bottom of the window to switch quickly.
image

Now you'll see a live webpage loaded right inside your PowerPoint presentation.  You can markup the slide as you would any other with PowerPoint tools, or you can interact with the website just as you would in a browser.
image
If you need to change your webpage, click the Edit Page Property button on the Insert tab.
image
Enter the new website address you want, and finish as before.

image
You can also add multiple web pages to a presentation if you'd like.  You could even make a webpage comparison like we did with screenshots in our first slide.  Only difference here is, the web pages are both live, and you could demonstrate how to use them to your audience.
image
When you save your presentation, you'll need to save it as a Macro-enabled presentation in.pptm format to preserve the web data.  Note that you'll be able to view the presentation on another computer only if it has the LiveWeb addon installed.  Since it's a free addon, you could keep a copy of it on your flash drive so you could easily install it if you need to show your presentation on another computer.
image
Whether you're trying to teach a class about computer usage or demonstrate your new website for your company's board members, the LiveWeb addin makes it easy to incorporate live web pages in your presentations.  There are many ways you could use this, so let us know how you use live web pages in your presentations to make information come alive!
If you'd like to use live web data in other Office applications, here's how you can Use Online Data in Excel 2010 Spreadsheets.
