Planning A Second Marriage: Everything You Need To Consider

If you are planning a second marriage, this could be for a variety of different reasons. Perhaps you fell out of love with your first partner, or there might have been a sad tragedy and you sadly lost your partner. Whatever the reason, planning a second marriage can be just as exciting as the first time. We have put together some of our top tips and advice on things you need to consider if you are planning a second marriage. Your second marriage can be anything that you want it to be, and don’t feel pressured to do something on a smaller scale because it is your second time. Do whatever you want to both do as a couple and enjoy every minute.

Choose the size of wedding that you both want

When you are looking at organising a second marriage you might think that you need to plan something on a smaller scale, or feel pressured by society to do something smaller, but this shouldn’t be the case. If you want to have a large, really grand wedding then you should go for it and do it. Alternatively, if you want to have a smaller, more intimate wedding then this is okay as well. Ultimately getting married is your day so make sure that you do what you both want to do.

Create your guest list & budget

Just because you are planning a second marriage, it doesn’t mean that you need to do anything different to anyone planning a first marriage. The same rules apply and a lot of what you plan and decide to do will depend on your budget. Sitting down to plan your budget is one of the first things that you will need to do, as this will form the basis of your whole planning process, and will depend on whether you choose a small or large wedding.

Depending on your budget you will need to think about your guest list and who you want to invite to be part of your special day.  Your guest list will include family members and friends who are important to you both as a couple. If you want to keep to a tighter budget then you might decide to have a smaller, more intimate wedding. This is also a really nice idea to do for a second marriage, and you can really celebrate the day, just the two of you.

Creating your gift list

An important part of any wedding is to create a gift list that you can send to your guests and help them with presents that they would like to buy for you. Thinking about the gifts for a second marriage will be slightly different to a first marriage, in the sense that you may have already established a home together, so things such as kitchenware will not be needed. Try to think about gifts that you both will need, or you could choose to ask your guests to donate to your honeymoon fund instead, and donate cash. This is a really nice idea and you can look at planning a honeymoon of your dreams after the wedding.

Wedding dress

If you are getting married a second time you might decide to choose a dress that is less of a focal point, or you may choose to have something that really makes a statement. Whatever you choose, make sure that it’s something that you love and will be comfortable all day. If you don’t want to wear a dress, you could choose to have an elegant suit instead, especially if you are having a really small wedding.

Bridal shower

This is something that many people are not sure if they are allowed to have or not, with a second marriage, however we think that if it’s something you want to have, then why not have one! At the end of the day, your wedding is something that should be celebrated, so invite your friends and enjoy a night out, or even an afternoon tea together.

Choose to do traditions that you both want

As this is your second marriage and you will have done this before, you have the option to choose the traditions that you want for your special day. Make sure that you only include the traditions that mean something to you both as a couple, and just cut out the ones that don’t.
