I decide to clean my room.
I start by picking up a few clothes from the floor, but then I notice the laundry basket is overflowing.
So I decide I should do laundry first.
I walk to the laundry area, and on the way I see a half-empty water bottle on the hallway shelf.
I don’t want it leaking, so I take it to the kitchen.
In the kitchen, I spot dirty cups in the sink.
If I’m here anyway, I might as well wash the cups first.
I turn on the tap, but then I remember I’m low on dish soap.
So I open the cabinet to check, and a bag of snacks falls out.
Now I’m thinking the cabinet is a mess.
I decide to organize it quickly—just a few minutes.
While moving things around, I find a grocery receipt and remember I still haven’t tracked my expenses this week.
So I grab my phone to update the budget.
As soon as I unlock my phone, I see a message notification.
I reply “quickly”… then I check another message… then I check a news alert… then somehow I’m watching a 2-minute video that turns into five more.
I finally put the phone down and remember the laundry.
I go back, but I can’t find my detergent… because it’s still in the cabinet… which I never finished organizing.
I return to the kitchen and notice the cups are still half-washed, the tap is dripping, and my room is still a disaster.
I walk back to my room, and on the way I step on a stray sock and nearly slip.
At the end of the day:
-
The room is still messy
-
The laundry is not done
-
The sink is still full
-
The cabinet is half-organized
-
My budget is untouched
-
My phone is somehow at 12% battery
-
And I’m exhausted… for reasons I can’t clearly explain
Then I try to understand why nothing got done, and I think, “But I’ve been busy all day!”
I decide I should fix this habit and become more organized… but first I’ll just set a reminder on my phone… which means opening my phone again… which means—oh no.
So yes, it’s totally fine to stay busy like this—life is basically one long game of “What was I doing again?” Don’t take it too seriously. If your brain wants to sprint between 17 tiny tasks and finish none of them, let it. At least you got your steps in, had a full day of “productivity,” and earned the right to be tired. Just remember: tomorrow is a fresh chance to finally do the first thing… right after one quick check of your phone. 😄
