The Excellent Employee

For a large scale project our contractors are required to visit 1000 locations to perform the survey however are having issues in visiting these locations because each location owner has a different security procedure (to get access to the technical room) in terms of passport details, company official letter, National ID, company license number, trading number, supervisor details, online applications, filling special forms and several other requirements. Due to this issue, each city’s progress for surveys completion is different; some are slow while some are optimum.

During my daily analysis of the project, I have noticed the following behavioral approach from different resources perfuming the surveys:

1.     Employee-1: Goes to the site, experiences access issue, comes back to office, complains to his manager and asks his/her support in resolving the issue. His manager supports him to resolve the issue and survey is done after some days. Employee-1 continuous the same procedure for all 1000 sites surveys
2.    Employee-2: Access issue observed, comes back to office and prepares the documentation and resolve the issue at his own without involving his manager. Continuous the same procedure for all 1000 sites surveys in his city.
3.    Employee-3: Access issue observed, comes back to office, completes the documentation and finalizes the requirements with the building management for future access. Keeps this document in his drawer so that it can help him in future. Continuous the same procedure for all 1000 sites surveys.
4.    Employee-4: Access issue observed, completes documentation, resolve the access issue, generalize the protocol and procedure to resolve access issues in future. Prepares the database of each site, records all the detailed information about site (owner name, mobile number, access procedure, visiting timing, procedures etc) and shares this with all his colleagues to save their time for future site visits.
Its clear that while all 4 employees are completing the given job however person-4 is the most effective person who not only is completing the job without bothering his manager but also thinking ahead as well in the best interest of the company. His smart approach will help save extra time for revisits of sites, reduce resource efforts and decrease company expenses. (Imagine, if each extra visit consumes 10 USD (petrol/TADA etc) then how much money we are talking about for 5000-8000 sites!!!
Although it’s a telecom/IT example but indeed the concept is applicable to all kind of professional fields where each employee has a different professional attitude toward the work in his/her domain. Some employees keep complaining & criticizing, while others are solution focused, responsible and efficient. So next time if you think that you and your colleague both perform the same amount of work but the boss likes the other person then think which category of employees do you belong to as per above example? Think whether you posses short vision or futuristic vision? Think whether you think locally or think globally? Think whether your work on tasks (to make things done) or on procedures (to improve the overall cost and efficiency)? Think whether you are an organized person and record your activities more professionally or just don’t care about mature documentation ? Remember, it’s all about your approach and at attitude that makes you a better employee!!!  You may want to read my article whether Hard work Will Guarantee My Professional Growth?

Shoes: The Sales Men

You will perhaps have heard this very old story illustrating the difference between positive thinking and negative thinking:
Many years ago two salesmen were sent by a British shoe manufacturer to Africa to investigate and report back on market potential.
The first salesman reported back, "There is no potential here - nobody wears shoes."
The second salesman reported back, "There is massive potential here - nobody wears shoes."

This simple short story provides one of the best examples of how a single situation may be viewed in two quite different ways - negatively or positively.
We could explain this also in terms of seeing a situation's problems and disadvantages, instead of its opportunities and benefits.
When telling this story its impact is increased by using exactly the same form of words (e.g., "nobody wears shoes") in each salesman's report. This emphasizes that two quite different interpretations are made of a single situation.
On the same line we counter so my situation in our daily work life, which certainly can become an opportunity for us and our mindset play a vital role to make that count an win-win situation.

The Cleaner Lady and Millionaire Lady

This story is about a beautiful, expensively dressed lady who complained to her psychiatrist that she felt that her whole life was empty, it had no meaning.

So, the lady went to visit a counselor to seek out happiness.

The counselor called over the old lady who cleaned the office floors.

The counselor then said to the rich lady "I'm going to ask Mary here to tell u how she found happiness. All I want u to do is listen to her."

So the old lady put down her broom and sat on a chair and told her story:

"Well, my husband died of malaria and three months later my only son was killed by a car. I had nobody. I had nothing left. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat, I never smiled at anyone, I even thought of taking my own life. Then one evening a little kitten followed me home from work. Somehow I felt sorry for that kitten. It was cold outside, so I decided to let the kitten in. I got some milk, and the kitten licked the plate clean. Then it purred and rubbed against my leg and, for the first time in months, I smiled.

Then I stopped to think, if helping a little kitten could make me smile, may be doing something for people could make me happy.

So, the next day I baked some biscuits and took them to a neighbor who was sick in bed.

Every day I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me so happy to see them happy.

Today, I don't know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do.
I've found happiness, by giving it to others."

When she heard this, the rich lady cried. She had everything that money could buy, but she had lost the things which money cannot buy.

"The beauty of life does not depend on how happy you are; but on how happy others can be because of you..."

Self-Talk - The Art of Excellence

Once you realize that your world arises from your thoughts and emotions, that your outer situations reflect your inner state, you start to see a much larger pattern working in your life. You start to understand how your financial, relationship and health situations arise, why they are so, and how you can change them without fail.

One of the patterns that you can now recognize as having a massive effect on your life is your self-talk pattern. We all talk to ourselves in our minds. this mental conversation with ourselves that never stops.

You maintain your world by your self-talk. Remember, what you think about is what determines your next moments. But it is mostly negative, it is limited to your limited ideas and it is 90% repetitive thoughts. This is what keeps your world as it is, no change. When you finally stop the self-talk it becomes optimistic and positive.

There are three kinds of people…
1. There are those that are not even aware that they are having a mental conversation with themselves they can’t even remember what they were thinking.
2. Then there are those who know they have mental self-talk, but they are unable to control its direction.
3. small fraction of the population that can turn self-talk off completely. These are the masters. They have chosen to quiet the mind and become aware. They are quite and simply observant without comment, judgement or thought.

As long as you keep your self-talk on, you will be bound to repeat the same path, the same choices, the same errors, over and over. There is nothing new and nothing fresh. 90% of the 50,000 thoughts you have per day are repetitive.

Life is always flowing, always fresh, always progressive and powerful, always clear and clean. People think that their thinking is what helps them. The right amount of thinking at the right time is useful, but too much is destructive and polluting. You probably need to think about 10% of the time only, no more.

Audit your thoughts today. Become aware of your self-talk and stop it. At the right time, your spirit will give you the appropriate Thought. The other mental noise is not real Real thought is clear, powerful, decisive, and lovingly without fear. It is a statement of pure knowing.

When you stop your self-talk, you create a vacuum. When you drop your self-talk, the most amazing accomplishments begin to happen.

9 Keys To Confidence

 When you hear the word ‘successful’ who comes to your mind first? Someone on TV or real life who seems to feel no fear and says the perfect thing and does things confidently, right? Yes, Confidence is tied to success, and vice versa.

There are several assumptions we make about these confident people.

Firstly, we assume confident people are born that way and possess a natural ability to do or say things that you cannot do or say. They can walk into a bar and talk to someone, because it is an innate ability that they possess. Because of their ‘inborn gift’, they can go anywhere, say anything and do anything.

Fortunately, that is not true! Confidence is a learnable skill. No one was born feeling confident or not confident. We were all born as clean slates. The years of social conditioning and all the other factors make us adopt certain mindsets. Would you be surprised if I told you that you can feel confident this very moment? Yes, you can tell yourself that you need to feel confident right now and you can probably turn it on like a switch. The only difference is that the switch does not stay on forever and will probably flick down in a minute after you adopt that attitude and mindset. The later part of this article will address how to adopt and sustain the confidence mindset.

Another assumption about confidence is that confident people are never scared. Again, this is untrue. Confident people can be scared like the rest of us; they have the same set of limiting thoughts and fears that make them feel not confident at times. What sets them apart is their ability to rise above these fears and forge ahead despite them.

The third assumption is that confident people are confident in all areas of their lives. This isn’t necessarily true. Someone who is confident to ask their boss for a raise may not necessarily feel confident to ask someone out on a date, or vice versa.

Confidence is not necessarily about knowing all the answers; it’s about being able to move forward knowing that you will figure it out. It is knowing that you can handle whatever comes at you.
Here are some strategies and tips for upping your confidence level to make it ever-lasting. Like with all mind-related work, these tools and strategies will produce results only if they are ingrained in the DNA of your being. That begins with consciously practicing them until living in this way becomes a truly ingrained habit.
1. Awareness of your strengths

Not many of us have consciously taken time to understand our own strengths. Being aware of one’s own strengths is an important tool in boosting confidence. There are many online resources and books to help you find your own strengths. StrengthFinder 2.0 is a great book and also provides an online assessment to identify your top strengths. You will be surprised at how spot on it is. The key for success with this strategy is to identify your strengths and constantly remind yourself of them. Make a a list of these strengths and keep it in a handy spot like your wallet, your work desk, or your mirror. That way you can constantly remind yourself of your strengths and play to them. Playing to your strengths will help in making you feel confident about your abilities and provide a constant boost.

2. Confidence-competence loop

The more you do something, the better you become. When you first started riding a bike, you faltered and fell a few times. But you kept at it. The more you tried it, the better you got. And one day, you were able to ride successfully without falling, to the point that you now thoroughly enjoy riding the bike. This is the same competence-confidence loop that you can employ in other areas of your life.
Try it during situations that make you feel uncomfortable and not confident. If you hate eating alone at a restaurant, do it every day for the next 2 or 3 weeks. It’s going to feel weird and uncomfortable at first. The first few times you are not going to feel confident and the hour could feel long. But by the end of the third week, i guarantee you will feel more confident. If you fear public speaking, do it enough and you will see that fear disappear. Very soon, you will be delivering presentations with confidence and ease. This is also tied to the next tip.

3. What’s the worst that can happen?

Often times, that little voice in our heads stops us from doing something and asks questions like:
“Am I sure? Does this make sense for me? Am I capable of this? Do I know all I need to know to do a good job? What if I don’t succeed? What if people laugh at me?” and so on.
That’s when asking a simple question like “What’s the worst that can happen?” may offer a different perspective and a potential way to turn that voice off. What’s the worst that can happen when you try to ask someone out on a date? They could say no. Is that the end of the world? Filter your thoughts through the lens of abundance. Try the ‘whats the worst that can happen?’ tactic the next time that little voice in your head starts asking questions.

4. Past successes

“The more you acknowledge your past successes, the more confident you become in taking on and successfully accomplishing new ones” – Jack Canfield.
Jack captures the essence of this strategy perfectly with this above quote. Even small successes are successes to be noted and celebrated. Every small step that is accomplished towards a major goal is still a step to be celebrated. Sometimes we are so lost in reaching the end goal, we forget to acknowledge the little steps that we take and the little achievements we reach on our path to the goal. Each of these successes from your past should be resurrected in your memory often, serving as a reminder about your abilities and again injecting you with a confidence boost.

5. Preparation

For certain tasks, just preparing well ahead of time soothes that negative voice in the head and prevents it from popping up again. Preparing for a speech that you do not feel confident delivering, or a meeting with your boss, or anything that can be prepared for, is definitely a surefire tactic for increasing confidence.

6. Say thank you for compliments

When someone compliments you for anything – for your work, the way you did something, the way you said something or simply for the way you look, how do you react? Do you shrug it off and say ‘it was nothing’, ‘I am not sure why I was given this award’, I don’t deserve it’, ‘I just got lucky this time around’… all these are indicators of weakened confidence.
You do not believe enough in yourself to accept compliments.
Switch out that thinking and start accepting compliments graciously. When given a compliment learn to say thank you comfortably, thanking the person for recognizing your efforts and offering support. It is a display of belief in yourself which repeated consciously over a period of time begins to deeply seat itself in your mind- leading to stronger levels of confidence.

7. Fake it ’til you make it

There are 2 opposing views on this strategy. Some advocates strongly believe that ‘faking it ’til you succeed’ can increase your confidence and thereby increase your competence. The opposing view believes that it is not ethically right to fake it in the first place. I suggest an in-between approach.
You’ve heard of dressing for success. It is a form of faking it ’til you make it. You dress ‘up’ to get the job you want. That does not mean you are not competent or that you are faking it. It means that you want the job and believe you can perform well in that role, and you are displaying that attitude in your external appearances as it relates to the job. You can’t fake being a professional singer if all you do is sing in the shower. But if you are a great singer with true capabilities and experience, looking for better singing opportunities, using a little ’embellishment’ is not wrong. In fact, you are not even faking it at that point.

8. The power of affirmations

Affirmations are simple, positive, and specific statements written in the present tense with the sole purpose of changing one’s thoughts. These sentences help in strengthening and reinforcing beliefs you need to achieve success. Affirmations practiced faithfully rewire the brain and help us break negative thought patterns. The best thing about affirmations is that there is no limit to the number of affirmations you can create and say- and each affirmation can be unique for you and for the thought pattern you are trying to break.
The key to finding success with affirmations is through repeating the affirmations on a consistent basis, preferably multiple times- and saying them with conviction. Give this a power boost by standing in front of the mirror and saying these affirmations as you look at yourself. Some examples of affirmations for boosting self-confidence are:
  • I have confidence in my ability to do whatever I set my mind to;
  • I am discovering more wonderful things about myself with each passing day;
  • I truly like myself and this helps others to accept me for who I am;
  • I believe in myself completely;
  • I believe that I can achieve anything I want;
  • My ability to conquer my challenges is limitless;
  • My potential to succeed is infinite;
  • I acknowledge my own self-worth;
  • My confidence is soaring.

9. Gratitude

In today’s fast paced society, we are generally lost in the daily grind of life and the tendency is to focus on the negative and the bad things that make life a challenge at times. We forget to think about and appreciate the positive. Appreciating each and every small blessing in our lives becomes a task taken for granted and we even forget that those little blessings are in fact blessings that make our life beautiful in some way.

Another great habit to form is the habit of making time to be grateful. Start a gratitude journal and spend 2-3 minutes every night expressing 3-5 things in your life that you are thankful for. Write them down. The power of the written word has been constantly proven to be stronger than the spoken. What you are grateful for every night need not be something profound. Small things like the smell of freshly baked cookies, hugs from your kids, to big things like a promotion at work, or an hour of uninterrupted reading could be things to be thankful for. Some days, I am just thankful to be alive- healthy and kicking. There is no limit to the number of things you can be grateful for. Make this a daily habit and see a tremendous change in your attitude to people and life. You’ll also see your confidence surging ahead when you realize what a great life you have.
As mentioned earlier, all these strategies and tools involve conscious effort and repetition until they become ingrained into your life. But the effort is well worth it when you see a constant upsurge in your confidence levels.
What other strategies do you use to up-level your confidence?

9 Tips to Make Smarter Decisions Faster!

9. Embrace uncertainty.

Print Page Numbers on Excel Worksheets

Go to the View tab and click Page Layout on the left of the Ribbon Menu.
Click one of the 3 sections of the header or scroll down and click one of the 3 sections of the footer. (Each section is for spatial reference and allows you to put data on the left, right, or in the middle of the header/footer.)
Or footer:
On the Design tab that should have appeared, click Page Number.
Once you click away from the header/footer, you will see the result:
You can add more text around the numbers; look to the next sections for more information.

Add "Page # of [Total Pages]"

This format is: Page 1 of 2
Go to the View tab and click Page Layout and click a section in the header or footer and then, on the Design tab, click the Header option on the left and choose the 3rd option from the top.
It will automatically put the result into the middle section for you.

Move the Text out of the Middle

To move it out of the middle, just click in the middle, select the data that appears, cut it, and paste it onto one of the sides.

Add Custom Text

In the last examples you may have noticed that the text that appears is different from what goes into the header/footer when you edit it.
A sort of mini-language is used for printing and this allows us to add normal text around it.
Go to the header and type This is page and a space and then click the Page Number button, another space, and then type of and another space, and finally, click the Number of Pages button. It will look like this:
This is page &[Page] of &[Pages]
You can put basically any text you want. The special elements start with an ampersand & and have square brackets around them.
By going to the Design tab for the header/footer, you can see options for the data that you can input in the Header & Footer Elements section. Also, by clicking the Header or Footer buttons on the left of the ribbon menu, you will see many pre-made options that can be useful and save a bit of time.

Working with headers and footers is a very important feature to make more professional looking spreadsheets when they are printed.

Excel: Entering Same Information in Multiple Sheets

How to edit multiple worksheets at the same time; this includes adding, editing, deleting, and formatting data.

Hold down the Ctrl key and click each sheet tab that you want to edit, or hold Shift and click the last tab to edit to select all tabs in the middle.
Start working:
Once you hit Enter or navigate to any other tab, you will see that what you did was copied to all selected worksheets.
This also works for formatting.

Be careful when using this feature! If there is data in the worksheets that are selected, it can be overwritten and Excel will not give you a warning about this. As such, you should only do this with worksheets that are formatted exactly the same or that start out empty, like in my example.
To deselect the tabs, click any tab when all are selected or click a non-selected tab.
Download the sample file for this tutorial if you'd like to work with the above example in Excel.

Thought is Energy - Search For Your Right Place

Your Internal Energy can not be stocked or blocked. If you do something to prevent your energy from flowing, it will find another way to express itself. If you do not follow your own energy, energy will express itself in sickness, tiredness, depression, skin diseases, temper tantrums, aggressiveness and other not so pleasant things.

So why not follow the road where your energy takes you? This is your road, your way!

As long as you try to be somebody else to please your colleagues, boss, neighbors, friends (other than blood relations), your energy will be stuck.

You become yourself. That is freedom : to be yourself.

See the world like a big wardrobe. Everybody has his own costume. There is only one that fits you perfectly. As long as you try to be someone else, you are walking around with a costume that is either too small or too big for you. You feel uncomfortable in it. That means you are not at the right place doing the right thing with the right people!

 How can you know if you are at the right place, doing the right thing with the right people?

There is a very simple criterion to find out : the questions comes in your mind! You can feel it : you feel good, everything is "right", your talents are asked for and you have the greatest pleasure to offer them to the those around you.

As long as you torture yourself with all these questions, it means you still didn't find your right spot on earth. You are doing an activity that somebody else should be doing. And your "job" is getting done by someone else who is not at his right place either! You see? if everyone is at his right place doing the thing he knows the best, everyone would be at peace, filled with energy and health, and everyone would live in wealth.

Go searching for your right place.

The moment you stop being harassed by so many questions and you feel your energy flowing in your veins, you know this is it! You are on your road, your road to freedom.

This is freedom!
