However, it would be wrong to expect such meals to be tasty and you cannot aspire or a gourmet meal here. They are known for being explosion proof and the best thing is that they can be fresh and good to eat for as long as five years. However, these types of food may lack and consistency and taste which you would certainly get from other types of food. At the end of the day, the main objective of such food is to ensure that the soldiers stay alive and in reasonably good condition.

It is almost the same as any standard MRE meal but there are reasons to believe that it has a slightly increased number of calories. Hence apart from being used in military it perhaps could be used outside too under special and extraordinary circumstances. A typical XMRE meal would consist of beef that is shredded and dipped in barbeque sauce. Further it also could have other taste enhances and side dishes such as Cheese Tortellini, Macaroni and Chilli and you also can expect chicken pesto pasta. Hence you can now breathe slightly easy because of the simple fact that you will be able to also reasonably satisfy your taste buds. However, it will not be the same as that of home cooked food or the food which you have in hotels and restaurants.

Heating Is Possible

The heating can be done quite easily without the need for stove and other heating apparatus through a very advanced technology. Hence if you are away in some dark and cold corner of the world for a long period of time, you can be sure that you will find the XMRE meals quite useful.

Some Downsides
There are of course some downsides as far as this type of packed and ready to eat foods are concerned. They can at best give you a calorie count of 1200 and therefore in case of strenuous works you may need more than one such pack of MRE meals. Further when you decide to carry a number of MRE meals for long distance and long time use, you should bear in mind that they are quite heavy when compared to freeze dried meals. This could be an extra burden in many cases.

However, at the end of the day, there is no denying the fact that these meals are a good way to stay reasonably healthy and fit especially when you are in desolate places where getting regular food is a big challenge.
