The King’s Pond
a lesson in honesty & personal responsibility

The story

Once there was a king who told some of his workers to dig a pond. Once the pond was dug, the king made an announcement to his people: one person from each household had to bring a glass of milk during the night and pour it into the pond. By morning, the pond should be full of milk.

💡 The king’s order: “One person from each household, a glass of milk during the night.”

After receiving the order, everyone went home. One man prepared to take the milk during the night. He thought: “Since everyone will bring milk, I could just hide a glass of water and pour it into the pond. Because it will be dark at night, no one will notice.” So he quickly went, poured the water into the pond, and came back.

In the morning, the king came to visit the pond — and to his surprise, the pond was only filled with water! What had happened? Everyone was thinking like that other man: “I don’t have to put the milk, someone else will do it.”

Two truths from the tale

1. When it comes to helping others — especially the poor — do not think that others will take care of it. It starts with you. If you don’t do it, no one else will. Change yourself to the way of God, serve Him, and that will make the difference.

2. Be honest in your actions, regardless of what others do. Your honesty is a reflection of your character, not a reaction to theirs.

🧭 Conclusion

The pond was filled with water because everyone assumed someone else would bring the milk. This story reminds us that collective responsibility begins with individual action. Do not delegate your duty to the crowd. Whether it’s charity, honesty, or faith — your small act of integrity can change the outcome. Be the one who brings the milk, even when no one is watching.

✨ “Your honesty is related to your character.”
