Looking for an easy way to keep track of employee work hours? There are many ways to keep track of hours worked. However, some systems may be time-consuming, and other specialized software programs can be downright expensive. I work at a company that has kept a manual time logging system ever since it started well over two decades ago. However, the system is prone to error, and also requires significant processing time to calculate the hours for each worker.

Recently, management decided that it was time to upgrade the timecard system, and I was assigned the task of finding software alternatives. After doing a bit of research online, I came across a website that has a list of the best timecard applications for mobile devices. I found it to be really helpful in finding timecard software options, so I’ll drop the link below:

Best 10 Timecard Apps

After testing the apps on their list, I reviewed my top 3 favorites.

Timesheet – Rating: 4.5, Downloads: 1M+

My first pick is Timesheet. What I really like about it is that there is no need to punch in or out to keep track of your time. Instead, Timesheet uses your GPS location to automatically log hours when you arrive or leave your workplace. Another neat feature I found is that it is smartwatch compatible, so you can keep track of time worked without taking your phone out of your pocket. I also like that your information is synced automatically across all devices, so it is always accessible when you need it. I also found it to be a great choice for tracking expenses and keeping personal notes on timecards.

Although I loved Timesheet’s time tracking features, I would have liked to see more options for customization, such as personalized themes. I must admit that the interface is neatly organized and well-designed, but I would a dark theme option would have been nice to have.

Pros: GPS activated time logging, smartwatch compatible, multi-device syncing, track expenses and notes.

Cons: No theme customization options.

Overall: Easily log hours worked with GPS activated time punching, although you will need to look elsewhere for light and dark mode themes.

HoursTracker – Rating: 4.5, Downloads: 500K+

My second pick is HoursTracker. I found it to be a great choice for closely monitoring hours worked, earnings, expenses, and more. I particularly liked that you can even view charts and statistics to get insight into income trends. Like my previous pick, you also have the option to log hours automatically using your GPS location. Another plus I found is that you can also keep track of mileage and tips, in addition to other expenses. And, last but not least, I liked that information is synced automatically to a cloud, so you always have a backup of your information.

The only drawback I found is that HoursTracker lets you track hours for up to 3 different jobs for a maximum period of 21 days. To keep track of your work history for a longer period of time, or to include additional jobs into your time tracking, you’ll need to pay to unlock the premium version. However, I did find that by deleting older information, you can free up space to continue tracking time without the need to spend a dime.

Pros: Track hours, earnings, expenses, tips, mileage, GPS-activated time logging, cloud-syncing, charts, and statistics.

Cons: Limited tracking features in the free version.

Overall: Track your worked hours and gain valuable insight with detailed charts and statistics, but you will need to upgrade to the premium version to unlock advanced time-tracking features.

Time Recording – Rating: 4.6, Downloads: 1M+

My third pick is Time Recording. One of the features I really like is that you can track hours using multiple hourly rates. So, if you have more than one job, or are doing work for multiple clients at different rates, then this is a great choice for you. Like my previous picks, your information is also backed up automatically to a cloud. It is also synced across your devices too, which is great for keeping information handy at all times. I also like that breaks and overtime are accounted for, so you can accurately calculate your earnings. Another plus I found is that you can set goals for the number of hours you need to work during a day, week, or month, so you can keep an eye on your productivity and ensure you are clocking the hours you need.

I did find Time Recording’s interface to be relatively simple compared to other timecard apps. However, you can rest assured that the developers built a solid and reliable application. I found that it runs really smoothly, and the variety of time tracking features quickly make up for its simple interface design.

Pros: Multiple hourly rates, cloud back-ups, multi-device syncing, track breaks and overtime, goal setting.

Cons: Simple interface.

Overall: Robust time tracking app that is great for logging worked hours at multiple rates, although its design is quite basic compared to other timecard apps.

Conclusion

So, these are my top 3 picks for timecard apps. If you are still using a manual system for logging time, these are a great way to increase your efficiency and save valuable time. On the other hand, if you are simply looking for an easy way to log time without spending a lot of money, then I’ve found these to be a great choice too. In any case, I’m certain your company will greatly benefit from using a timecard app, as employee’s timesheets will be logged and processed instantly, with all the information just a few taps away.
